It may not be the most authentic Italian fare in town, but this restaurant, decked out in checkered tablecloths and classic reproductions, can't be beaten for its friendly, no-frills atmosphere. Families and couples line up for the pizzas and home-made gnocchi.

I am going to split my review into to parts (food and service), as I don't want one to bias the other.

Food: As others have said it is not the greatest. I have eaten there quite a few times as I used to work nearby. I would say the pizzas are reasonable and some of their salads (although I would suggest staying away from the greek salad as it is below average- mainly due to choice of cheese).

Service: Here is were I have had mixed results. In the past, their service has been very good. I had even used them to provide catering for some company events in the past and they have always been timely and professional. Now for my rant. After not having been there for about a year or two, I recently went there with my girlfriend. It was close to dinner time, and my girlfriend wanted to eat something light (like a salad), because were not extremely hungry (in fact I wasn't hungry at all), as we had had a late and rather large lunch. The restaurant was not particularly busy. We sat down and ordered a large salad. At that we got a strange look from the waiter. "Just a salad?" After replying "yes, just the salad", the waiter gave a sound of disapproval and walked of. The restaurant owner and his wife were there that evening. There was an exchange between him and the waiter confirming our order, I guess he thought it strange that we only ordered a salad (which I guess is understandable given it was dinner time - although you don't need to shout it across the restaurant). What really did it for me, was that later on the owner, without being asked, came around with a jug of water to refilled the glasses of the couple at the table next to us, but completely ignored us with our nearly empty glasses. This shocked me, since all my past dealings with the owner and his wife, albeit a couple of years ago, had been so pleasant. I really felt insulted

Such a shame, as having supported this store on numerous occasions in it's early beginnings in Maizidian Xijie, I get treated so badly over a 45 RMB bowl of salad.

First and last time to visit this place. Ordered the meatballs, cuttlefish pasta and lasagna. The meatballs tasted funny and clearly not fresh and the cuttlefish pasta was so bland and avoided the accompanying seafood. We informed the waiter about the meatball and they took the dish back - clearly it was not right. Afterwards popped up to the washroom on the second floor and right next to it was the store room - with cold drinks etc on the floor next to the gents ! I will keep well away from Elisa in future - not pleasant.

I used to work near here, and would get lunch here whenever my tolerance for Chengdu Xiaochi would reach a limit and my wallet fattened. I mean, this place is not prohibitively expensive, but I have an issue against paying for mediocre pasta that I might as well make by myself. That said, among an abundance of bland, unremarkable dishes are a few that stand out. I've had success with some of their specials, notably a cream chicken pasta thing with porcini mushrooms. It does feel like a casual, lunch place rather than something you would seek out for a special dinner.

ditto with elsiecakes and chrisbert. absolutely not a fine italian dining experience. but i usually go there for lunch. higher than average service too, very friendly. their pasta, gnocchi, pizza and their salad are good.

I agree, it is not high class Italian food, but it was ok.
Just another average Italian restaurant as for example Annie's is.

I wouldn't call Elisa's high class Italian food, but it is consistently good, and I've found I like it better than a lot of other Beijing Italian places including Peter Pan and Annie's. It's the only place my office orders from. Plus, they're willing to deliver almost anywhere. Even when Amigo Pizza refused to deliver to us, even though we were on Guanghua Lu (the "wrong" side apparently, is too far to drive), Elisa's was willing, no questions asked. The food was even still warm when it got to us!
