Southern Belle

The ever-evolving food scene in Beijing has witnessed the opening of several ambitious restaurants this year and Sureno is no exception. Ensconced in the über-hip Opposite House Hotel, Sureño is refined, yet accessible, serving up some of the best Mediterranean food in the city.

With clean-lined Japanese aesthetic of the Opposite House, the open kitchen boasts a wood-fired pizza oven while friendly, competent service lends vibrancy and warmth – just the perfect balance to enjoy both cuisine and ambience. To add to the experience, the see-and-be-seen vibe makes people watching an interesting side-dish.

Based on recommendations from the helpful but unobtrusive waitstaff, we began with a light, yet satisfying, Porcini Consommé with Black Truffle Potato Gnocchetti (RMB58) and meltingly tender San Leo Carpegna Ham with White Truffled Honey and Melon (RMB138).

Hand-crafted Ravioli with Mozzarella and Ricotta (RMB108) and a flawless 250 gram Big Mama Wagyu Tenderloin (RMB278) left us holding our breath for dessert – a beautiful Baked Peach with Lemon Sorbet and Warm Dark Chocolate Mascarpone Flourless Cake with Clotted Cream (both RMB58) were well worth the wait and calories.

For fellow culinary curmudgeons who are difficult to please, we have found a go-to restaurant that is both an elegant spot for people watching and a warm, relaxing atmosphere where the best dish is always the next one.

I have been here several times and the only thing I can order over and over again is the pizza, which is consistently good. I've tried a number of other things on the menu and came twice for brunch and continuously left feeling insipid. The restaurant is trendy, hip, nicely decorated and in prime location. The Opposite House is a sleek hotel, but the the food at Sureno is lackluster. My friend swears that the seafood pasta is good, maybe i'll give that a try next time with my pizza.

I really like the brunch, for 188, it is a really good value Of course, food for a dinner is better but the brunch is really nice. There is this band who sing really cool. Service is attentive. I wanted to go again last week but it was closed for 10 days... I was so sad...

After my fourth time at Sureno, it's time to review.

For big occasion, I always want to go to Sureno. First time, I took the selection of dessert: that's really good but I dislike the Tiramisu, the taste was weird...It's one of my favorite dessert usually... but chocolate cake amazing!

Second and fourth time, it was a brunch. There is always the same cool music band, really peaceful. Food is good, service is perfect. I appreciated the song of the band for my girlfriend birthday.

The third time it was for my birthday, it was delicious. Food was unbelievable great, ( better than brunch), I ate a tuna tartare, a calzone and a chocolate cake...chocolate cake...I dream of it everyday...

I love the decor too, and the chairs are so comfortable... In fact, I would like to spend my day there.

But it's so pricey for a student.... :-(

I went there a few times now and will come back for sure.

The staff is one of the most attentive and professional one can have in Beijing. Even in Europe it is hard to find such a good service.

The menu is one of those that make you think you will have to come back to taste all the different appealing dishes. The second time I came I was a little disappointed with the chef who put a little too much salt in most of the dishes we had, but it was the only detail that popped out of the great dinner we had. Last week I had the Veal scaloppine, and it was delicious ! Very good meat quality and perfect cooking. Last time I had such a great piece of veal was at Châteauvieux in Geneva.

It is pricy yes….but it is one of the rare place in Beijing where you get what you pay for.

As I said… I will come back.

For the price the set lunch the price is high to the quantity of food you get. My friend from Italy is nice and say the food is fine, but I know he is not impressed . May be we will try another high end restaurant , in sanlitun there are many choices.

tried this for dinner about a year ago and was rather underwhelmed. However after all the good things I'd heard about Sureno I thought I'd give it another chance and went there for their brunch with the family yesterday. Well, they delivered. RMB188 +15% for a 4 course brunch with free flow soft drinks (they also have a rmb298 version with free flow chapagne), a fabulous atmosphere and a lovely band is fantastic value. The food was simple but well executed, we chose organic baby pig for our main course and it was just delicious. We'll definitely go back.

I've been to Sureno a few times and was particularly impressed by my meal there last night. Prices are competitive for hotel dining--although I know Sureno doesn't like to be seen as that--but with a much cooler, more laid-back (but still refined) atmosphere. The buffalo mozzarella ravioli (RMB118) are so simple, but so perfect. The ravioli are huge, and the ingredients are all really flavorful and excellent quality. The rack of lamb (RMB228) was the best I've had in quite a while, and lamb is something I've eaten a lot of in Beijing. The portion isn't stingy at all, and the flavors of the apricot honey marinade and garlic and rosemary confit are fantastic. The wine list is extremely impressive, both for quantity and diversity of grapes, regions and prices. Looking forward to my next visit!

I've always loved this place since it first opened.

However, recent reviews confirmed my suspicion that food quality has suffered.

I used to be really amazed at how good food could taste @ Sureno - regardless of how big or small the crowd was.

The last visit was in summer, and I didn't have my usual yearning to go back after that.

@diablitox We are very sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience at Sureno. Unfortunately, the incident of the spilled red wine was not brought to my attention on that evening. Of course we would be more than happy to reimburse your friend for any dry cleaning or replacement expenses. We do care about our guests; kindly accept our apology. I hope to welcome you soon again to give you and your friends an appropriate Sureno experience. Best wishes, Reto Kistler (Restaurant Manager Sureno).

This place was good before. The chef was interested in talking with customers and we have eaten some good food here. But recently no one cares . I have also faced the food not kept its promise but the prices are same.

After reading a bit here and there a group of friends, decided to give a try to this place. The result: A very disappointing experience... that's Sureno. Although the restaurant itself has a nice modern decoration, the rest is not what you expect from a place. To begin the staff is not really reliable. When you need the services there is no waitress around to take your order or help you with whatever you need. Raise your hand, clap, make noise, they wont listen... at the end you have to scream "fuwuyuan" to catch their attention and the attention of the rest of the diners of the place. One particular experience was the top of the night, we ordered a few bottles of wine and when serving the wine, the waitress my friend who was having having his birthday poured a complete glass of wine on my friend' brand new pants... but hey! he got a free glass of wine again, Im wondering if that will be enough for covering his ruined 350US pants... lets jump about something else... Food!! yes is Sureno, contemporary cuisine! That means good food!! WRONG: We asked 8 starters. All of them small, flavourless and overpriced. Then a main dish... here goes even worst, diminutive portions and extremely expensive! In my personal case, I asked for a kind of spaghetti with sea food. The presentation was awful... It was a kind of oil wrapped pasta with 2 shrimps, half mini crab and a a couple of diminutive things more... completely flavourless. The experience for my friends was similar. Finally we got our bill to pay... well as we expected was a large amount of money for one of the worst dinners we ever had in Beijing.

In general, is a good place to impress someone with the decor, but also to be disappointed about the food. After all, that's why you go to a restaurant, for the food.

Great sunday brunch with reasonable price- RMB 188. You get four courses, starter, soup, main course and dessert/ cheese platter. Everything I had was really good, though my favorite were the pizza and dessert platter. The Tiramisu is probably the best in town. Try pimm's, it's a very very refreshing drink for summer. Attentive service as always!

Went for the Sunday Lunch. It was bad, bad, bad bad! Nowhere near worth 296 rmb! The tapas were 1 out of 5 stars, with the only good one being the rice filled melted cheese meatballs, the mint yogurt soup was also 1 out of 5 and not satisfying, the main dish of suckling pig was not at all like traditional Segovia suckling pig and needed a sauce or baste, the crab risotta was good but not out of the ordinary, 3 out of 5 stars, the cheese platter was small and average and the dessert platter had a nutella like cake but was also average if not sub par.

I used to trust City Weekend's reviews of places, but after this I will never trust it again. Sureno is not worthy of 5 stars and should only be given 3 max. This is why they should make it out of 10 stars to give a more adequate vote. 3 out of 5 makes it sound good when it is only average,e 5 out of 10 is better. yes this is better than middle america chilli's or tgif, but not worthy of gourmet status!

I have been to Sureno several times in the past year and always enjoyed it. Not been for a couple of months as I've been traveling but took the family there on Friday and had simply the worst meal. Everything was really average or worse. What a shame. Perhaps we were just unlucky. Or are they getting lazy? I will go back and hope it was the former. But with the competition getting tougher the likes of Sureno need to be consistently great if they are to keep customers.

Went there last night and we started with a sicilian tuna bruschetta. We ordered the a la plancha wagyu sirloin and suckling pig for our main course and ended our dinner with the tiramisu. Service, food and place was perfect and will definitely come back...

Straight forward, went here for dinner last night and it was 100% perfect. The food, the ambiance, the service, the wine.... everything was perfect.

Two us shared a Spanish red wine, ordered the Rustic Frois Gras, Eggplant and Mozzarella (the only thing that wasn't STUNNING), the Olive and Peppers bruchetta, and then she ordered the Tuna which has an AMAZING sauce while I had the Mama Wagyu Tenderloin and it was incredibly good. To top it off, we had the TMSU experience, and yes, it was an experience.

Then afterward (we ate, drank and talk from 8pm-12am without noticing) we hopped over to Punk for DJ Wordy's Hotpot show and the bar manager who noticed us having dinner earlier gave us a couple free cocktails.

Bravo Opposite House.

Been here several times, food is always good. Last visit on Sunday, i had nicely done fritto misto and ossobuco. my friend had wagyu carpacsio and porcetta. All our meal was awesome! Should try Marino's tiramisu, the best by far in Beijing.

Been here several times. Was there as well last night with 14 other friends. We totally enjoyed the ambiance and the service from this restaurant.

When it comes to the food, we gave mixed reviews 5 to 10 out of 10. The ravioli and paella were good but not wow. It might not worth the price though. The same for bruschetta, the quality (and quantity too?) doesn't meet the expectation for the price we paid.

But their foie gras, 24 hours marinated baby chicken and lamb rack were top notch delicious. If I had to choose what to eat there next time, it would be foie gras for appetizer and 24 hours marinated baby chicken for main course.

As I mentioned in my previous review, they have a good range of wine selection. Not to mention the delicious Hoegaarden. Yum!

Unfortunately, something happened last night. Most of the people in the group that I took there asked for separate bills by the end of our meal. They have a custom back at their country that restaurant will automatically give you separate bills for each individual. But since we're not in their country and I don't think we have that habit here in China (or Asia?), it was chaotic to sort out the bills for each individual.

I've been lucky enough to be able to some nice restaurants, not just in China, and I've never expected or received separate bills, so I am accustomed to the system that Sureno has. Totally fine for me. The manager explained this is their first experience having to deal with separate bills. That's understandable.

I just would like to give my appreciation to Sureno for trying their best to give us individual bill as efficient as possible.

I'll be back! ; )

Same as the hotel- a very beautiful and interesting place.
Start with a glass of Hoegaarden (my favourite beer) in the outside garden and continue my dinner in the dinning room.
All the dishes I ordered were nice and very impressive. I think the chef had perfectly create his mediterranean food to suit the chinese taste bud .
The restaurant is always full, so better to make a reservation before your next visit.

Beginning on the 15th of May, Sureño will roll out a new spring/summer menu, open the Sunken Garden and offer a special brunch offering on Sundays.

The new menu at Sureño will have over 30% new items and focus more on other parts of the Mediterranean – going more towards the islands and a bit into North Africa.

Additional updates have been made to the dessert menu as well as the wine list with nearly 300 selections from which to choose.

Sunken Garden Opens Sureño will offer full meal service in the Sunken Garden in mid-May. The new menu coupled with a range of entertainment will be an alfresco extension of the Sureño experience.

Access to the Sunken Garden is down a flight of stairs north of The Opposite House or by way of Sureño’s garden entrance. Seating is available for approximately 50 guests and the garden space is framed with bamboo planters and an eye-catching art installation by designer Lyndon Neri.

Sunday Brunch Along with the opening of the Sunken Garden and new spring/summer menu, Sureño is also introducing a new "Barbacoa Your Sunday" brunch inspired by the day-long tradition of alfresco dining with friends and family. The brunch menu will feature a selection of grilled meats, seafood and vegetables with an emphasis on the "family style" way of dining.

The a la carte menu will be available for brunch service too.

Keeping in line with a long standing tradition, a selection of specially priced Mediterranean favorites like rosé, prosecco and champagne will be available by the bottle or by the glass.

"Barbacoa Your Sunday" brunch at Sureño will also feature 4-piece Latin-jazz ensemble in the Sunken Garden as well as a special "Kids Corner" with games and entertainment.

Absolutely impressed. This place was chic without feeling overtly stuffy- staff was very professional and dressed just as classy, contemporary as the setting. Went on a Wednesday night at 9:30PM and the place was still packed with people. Pasta of mixed noodles with seafood was ok, about 118rmb for a small plate (expected), the wagyu beef slices as the main entree, little over 200rmb, was tasty with a nice freshly steamed garlic where you crush it and the pieces come out fresh. Will go back again!

Excellent dining experience!!

Food was fantastic, we chose well, unfortunately we did not delve into the main fare as by the time we were reading it our minds and stomachs were reeling in four tapas, a bruschetta and a pasta… each.

The flavours combined exquisitely with a glass of Antonori and a wee Bordeaux... or two. The pace of the service was perfect, there was one large table nearby which normally would signify a terrible wait in many Restaurants. We ordered at the same time, but ours and their meals came out with perfect timing. Timing when you’re enjoying a meal with a loved one is everything.

The Manager’s introduced themselves making us feel important, a truly classy touch.

If I had to be picky, maybe second and third drinks service at the table was a little slow, but not enough to sway my rating, as this was a dining experience that has left me wanting more.

always offers a very pleasant dining experience everytime i go to this place. like what everyone said previously, the decor and ambiance are just really nice, relaxing but yet so chic.

good service, that's for sure. im always very impressed with their service since we enter the restaurant until we are picking up our coat at the coat check.

good tapas! pasta was pretty good too. pizza was ok, maybe it depends on personal preferences, but i think there are cheaper places out there that serves better pizza. dessert is oh-so-good. the only main course that ive tried so far was the lamb with apricot honey sauce and apple puree. it's really good!

a friend told me their australian prime t-bone is very good too. yes, its 700 kuai something. but he said the t-bone is made for 2-4 persons. so it's really worth it.

good wines selection. my favourite, their tuscany red wine.

they seem to really pay attention to every single details. even their tea bag is very unique. it's pyramid shape with paper tea leave on top of it.

will definitely come back again to this place. ive recommended this place to several friends and they all feel satisfied with sureno.

Chic, friendly and very relaxed.

The food is well thought out and tastes very fresh. The pizzas have to be some of the best in town, thin and delicious. Homemade pasta was a pleasant treat as was the flour-less chocolate cake.

The wine list is a monster with some well priced options. One of my favourites is the Redbank Sunday Morning Pinot Gris.

Service was first class and the kids not only got highchairs but toys and some rather trendy tableware.

My only issue was with the bruschetta. Lovely as it was, as jennai97 says, it was woefully inadequate for RMB58. I think a far better option would have been to use a hearty slab of their homemade focaccia as the base rather than the tiny slices of french bread they used.

Bruschetta aside, this place is well worth future visits.

What a lovely place, finally! The food is good, the service is attentive (noticed that i was about to share something and instantly got me a side plate and extra fork without me asking!) and really quite fun! They really know how to choose the food for you if you are feeling indecisive (like me most of the time!!) I will be going back!

its the place to go with your date. Table setting could be more romantic, I mean you want to be able to touch the leg of your friend, at least sometimes. lobster was a bit highpriced, good wine selection, risotto was too al dente, even though soft was ordered. service is attentive and good willed but could get some more training for this level of restaurant

Atmosphere is great, food was fantastic, dessert is just soooo good! I would say bravo. The surrounding are just hip and extremely busy the night we went. Would just have one suggestion - a bit more attentive service, it was hard to just get a pot of tea, do understand that it was a busy night. And you don't feel the "underground" of it, very good natural lighting design.

After hearing rave reviews, I was a little disappointed with the calzone I ordered - tough like fabric, put together with haste and necessity. Maybe I ordered wrong? Thumbs up for the extensive wine list.

didn't feel like this was good value for the $$$ spent. a friend ordered a white tuna bruchetta and it was only two pieces for 58 rmb. two pieces! even london, nyc does not charge that much for two pieces of bread.

pasta was good but lukewarm.

good selection of wine.

however, overall can't say that i will be back anytime soon.

A great atmosphere and an amazing design in the new hotel in the heart of Sanlintun. We just tried the Sureno for lunch and I must say it is good.

I loved how fresh are the ingredients and the very good quality of the service. We tried the Cod fish for the starter: it was prepared "a la bacalao" with a delicate aioli sauce and it was great. Then a very good pizza prepared like in Italy with fresh and tasty ingredients: very light and pleasant.

Will go back and try for a dinner.
