Boasting dark wood paneling and floor-to-ceiling windows offering an eyeful of Houhai, this small jazz dive defines urban sophistication. Started by Liu Yuan, Cui Jian's former saxophonist, it's the most authentic jazz joint in town, featuring top acts from Thursday to Sunday.

Surely at a nightclub it's the opposite: the music is so loud you can't have a conversation?

Go on the live music nights, and East Shore is a whole lot of fun.

Disappointing. Claims it to be the "center of Beijing jazz" but it's basically a nightclub with some live music. On several nights you could barely hear the musicians over the lull of the crowd chatting away as if they were in a McDonald's. When I asked the bartender to turn up the tunes, he told me that "we like it this way."

Please let us know when Quattrology's singer returns! It's a whole different tone to the evening when she's doing her thing. Get well soon!

I love the place, but someone got to tell the staff something about a good environment.

  1. I wasn't allowed to take pictures! Its a jazz club, that makes no sense. I even asked one of the waiters and got the standard "nonono" reply. Its not a mafioso-place like Cargo, not will it disrupt anything so fix it.

  2. One of the waiters asked us to order in a way that seemed more like a threat than anything else; "order!"-like.

I hate to say negative stuff about east-shore, cause the music is so nice and the athmosphere is usually good, but I have to be honest when a nice place screws up and gives me a bad wibe for no proper reason.

A great place for music lovers, and surely the best place for live jazz in the city. A fantastic vibe and enthusiastic performances. My only gripe is that service can be really really slow. Order two drinks at once is my advice.

Don't know what's changed, but on the three occasions I've been there's been no smoke problem.

Good traditional jazz-bar atmosphere, music was also fine. But it was way too smoky, my eyes were hurting after 30 min. I gotta say that it is nothing special...

I had an excellent experience at this jazz club, and my only complaint is that it would do well with some new furniture, and of course smoke-ban, which is unlikely beyond belief.

The musicians were absolutely great, and the environment was cozy and pleasant. Can be recommended.

not only offering great jazz, this place boasts one of the best views of HouHai. sitting in the corner overlooking the lake through the large picture window with the smooth tones of piano and jazz bass flowing over you and a great drink in your hand... a nice way to spend an evening :)

I generally try to go to East Shore when I can, if I don't have set plans and am with a small group of friends who are real 'serious' music lovers.

I do enjoy East Shore's eclectic line-up, and its best to check out who is playing before you go, if you are particular about your live music like I am.

That being said, East Shore is a favourite haunt of some of the more dynamic and progressive musical outfits around Beijing. From funky grooves with R'n'B infusions to ambient music bordering Free jazz, its definitely a place created with the musician in mind.

the live jazz music at East Shore is really engaging. one of the few greatest jazz places you can get in beijing. 2 weeks ago, a german bold guy playing piano was fantastic! drumer is cool. bass player has a funky smile. we have been visiting every Sunday night.

And the beat goes on Thursday - Monday this place keeps the pace with live jazz performances. Some range from inspirational, to downright formulaic. Get there and listen for yourself.
