Created by the whisky visionaries behind Ichikura, this Sanlitun bar serves decent, if pricey, cocktails and mixed drinks, as well as a snack menu. Though the high-design decor seems out of place on Sanlitun North Street, Kura Kura is a quiet, relaxed destination for revelers looking to escape the noise of the surround bar and club scene.

Kura Kura is a solid spot for a cocktail, but it seems out of place on Sanlitun North Street. The cocktails, while fine, didn't seem up to Ichikura caliber. And the decor was a little bright for my tastes. I will give it another chance in a couple of months.

My friends and I order double shots of Lagavulin, costing 300RMB each. It had the color of light urine instead of dark amber and tasted like absinthe. When we tried to tell the manager, his only response was "So what?"....as if daring us to ask for a refund. We're whisky connoisseurs who would easily spend 5000RMB on a typical night out. Only one of us drank half of his glass of backyard whisky out of pure good manners. 3 of us went home thirsty.

I was a little disappointed in the cocktails here. They all fell a little flat in the taste department, and my Old Fashioned had its very lonely sugar cube on top of a ball of ice that I had to wait to melt a little before I could get it into my drink. Still, being a sucker for Japanese food, I might go back hungry next time and have an Asahi with a bowl of curry.
