This Irish-themed pub features a classic dark wood bar, plethora of Jameson, and comfortable Emerald Isle booths and wooden chairs. The beer list boasts over a dozen imports, and they have a simple menu of standard Dublin pub fare.

I’m conflicted about this bar. I love the fireplace in the back. As far as I know this is the only bar in SLT that has one. But other than that the bar just seems exceptionally average. Not only that but the clientele are all old brits or euros that arrive around 4pm and don’t leave until their mistresses shoo them out the door at midnight. Yes, it’s close to where I live but so is the chuanr place next door (and the place next door has good beer too!). I’ve seen the bar lady completely bitch people out. At least the temper is straight up Irish.

When the James Joyce opened I prayed that it would be a great Irish bar for many reasons but particularly because I am Irish and live across the road from this bar. Well my prayer was answered. After a slow start the James Joyce has a lively crowd of expats who have all made this Irish bar a favourite local bar. The bar manager lived in Ireland for 9 years and knows how to run a pub. Guinness is not bad either.

Irish Charm
Located where Swensen’s used to be, this Irish pub has everything expected of a Chinese-owned, Emerald Isle bar. Staff are friendly and eager, and service is quick. We’re told the sound system is being replaced, and we hope they swap the blaring Beyonce tunes with something more culturally relevant. The James Joyce’s mixed drinks (¥40) are strong, but it’s the decent beer list most drinkers are after. There are an impressive 21 bottled brews and five on tap. After a few of these you’ll be jabbering in stream of consciousness, too. ■ Lauren Johnson
