Sakura, that was unfortunate. Maybe there's been changes since you were last there. My other half is Chinese. Sometimes she doesn't want to drink so orders only warm water. We did not experience what you did. Speak to the bar boss! He would fix it quickly!
There is something in what you say though. I have been coming to China since 2001. This journey I noticed a change in Chinese character - they been treating each other awfully. Perhaps China's international success has also made some arrogance - not only a Hill Bar thing. My friends here noticed it too. Very sad to see because China is such a wonderful place.
If it was a Hill Bar thing I do not think it can continue now they have a website at hill-bar.com where people can post comments.

Oh,mike u r from uk!!!Oh,u came here for holiday and will back on 3rd December.So u r still in China!!But i dont agree with u.Cos i seem to remember once i was there the waitress treat me so badly cos we dont order much stuffs.Feeling as if she was asking us to leave cos she could not earn more money.i went there cos a foreigner friend invite me there.If u get good service and have good feeling of it cos u spend ur money.i hate the girl there forget herself a chinese and forget she is a human being.In my eyes,she is a dog who beg for owner's love and bones.That's all.I feel i am a grump now.

I came to Guangzhou for a two month holiday at the end of September 2009. Sadly, I go back to the UK on 3rd December. I shall be back mainly because of the Hill Bar! I have been to this place far too much - and spent time recovering from some great evenings. Music, football, darts and most of all the chatter amongst expats and Western visitors made my visit tremendous. The bar staff are brilliant! I have been so impressed with the fun at this pub I decided to leave a parting gift (I develop websites). They now have a new site at www.hill-bar.com to provide a point of contact and sharing of distant cameraderie. Somehow, the Hill Bar manages to provide the atmosphere of a good bar with events organising, a place to talk business and sports, and semi-decent beer (I still haven't found a place with top quality dark beer here). Food is reasonably good. Oh - and they have free wireless Internet (where I'm writing this). I shall miss my friends and the bar staff :( They made my Guangzhou holiday something to remember! Thanks all!

What a really lame joint, checked it out last night since I read it was supposed to be good. But to be honest, this aint a place you will bring your missus to. Hill bar is kind of similar to the long gone dodgey bars on Hengshan Lu in Shanghai. Not the kind of bars you get that "Homey" feeling in.
this place is small but good value.Friendly staff and decent food.The place to go if you are in the Garden hotel area...
