Weibo Watch: What Do Chinese People Think of Jeremy Lin?
In Weibo Watch, City Weekend takes a look at the most talked about topic circulating China's biggest microblogging site. This week everyone is talking about Jeremy Lin. What are Chinese netizens saying about him?
Everyone is talking about Jeremy Lin right now (even us), so it’s no surprise that he became the number one topic on Weibo this week with over 1.41 million followers and 1,445,912 comments.
Linsanity has definitely swept the globe, but now it’s starting to feel like the new Knicks star is the little kid in the middle of an ugly divorce; everyone is trying to claim him for their own. Taiwan thinks he’s theirs and there is even a rumor that a Korean newspaper has claimed that he is of Korean descent. But more recently, the Chinese Basketball Association expressed their hope for Lin to join the national basketball team for the 2012 Olympics.
Um, good luck guys. In order to do this, Lin would have to give up his US citizenship.
In this article from Xinhua they were quoted as saying: “We hope that Lin grabs onto this opportunity with great determination”.
This very special offer from the CBA amused a lot of Weibo users. Most thought that it was “crazy, silly and ridiculous.”
Here’s what a couple of them have said...
Make sure that you don't join the CBA; if you do it will be "game over".
You officials have become foreign nationals, why do you expect him to give up his American citizenship?
"We hope that Lin grabs onto this opportunity with great determination” sounds like an old revolutionary expression from the ‘60s.
The amazing offer aside, what else have Weibo users said about the new sports star? Check out some more comments from Weibo below.
Why is everyone talking about this news? He's an American and doesn’t even speak fluent Chinese.
If he was born in China, he would probably end up being a civil servant.
All of Asia wants him; even Korea claims that he’s Korean. The media in China talks about him every day. The only link he has is that his grandpa is from the mainland, does he really have anything to do with us? His parents are from Taiwan and he’s born in the US. We are so desperate that we try to claim him for ourselves.
Too bad he’s American, which means he's a traitor.
Compared to the players in Chinese Mainland, I think he's no better in terms of technique or body strength, but he’s more confident. You can see it in his eyes and by the way he carries himself. You don’t see this among any Chinese players. This is because we live in a system where personality is killed growing up and one can never stand out.
Lin is Cinderella in real life. His story encourages young people to hope for the future. As long as you have a dream and work hard on it, you will make it.
China is so proud of him...yet he’ll still pass us by
People’s achievements have a lot to do with their environment. You should keep in mind that he was born in the US.
After Yao, we are happy to see another Chinese face in the NBA. Lin satisfied our desire at the right time. He's charming and he’s so popular thanks to the power of the media.
Lin is an American and never considered himself as Chinese. Why are we so excited and emphasizing that he is an American born Chinese?
Whether you love him or hate him, he is everywhere. What do you guys think? Have you caught Lin fever?

He's definitely a scholar athlete (sports man) that the world have seen too little of in this start of the 21st century. Harvard Econs degree + high-level basketball is a fantastic combination that's rare today...probably not so many people wants to excel any more. Does any one here recall the sports heroes of yester-years? Here's to wishing Lin with a more then Linear successes in the future.
