MONDAY

RAS Book Club - Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick @ The Puli Hotel: The RAS Book Club will meet to discuss Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea, with the book’s author, Barbara Demick. The book follows the lives of six North Korean citizens through some of the most tumultuous years of their country’s history.

TUESDAY

Movie Release: Happy Feet Two @ Various Theaters
Okay, so it probably won’t win an Oscar any time soon, but we’re suckers for adorable talking penguins. Watch in this light-hearted, family-friendly film as Erik the penguin struggles to live up to the expectations of his father Mumble, the master of tap dancing. In English with Chinese subtitles.

Art Exhibit: Hung Liu’s Heritage @ Elisabeth de Brabant Art Center: Artist Hung Liu may have been painting in America since 1984, but Chinese history has always stayed at the core of her work. In her oil paintings, which stem from historic Chinese photographs, she desires both “to preserve and destroy the image.” The manner in which she's added washes and drips fluidifies the photo-inspired images and parallels how memories dissolve into history. Exibit is ongoing until Feb. 29.

WEDNESDAY

Ladies Drive Free @ Stampede Karting: Who said women can't drive? Stampede Karting is giving the finer sex a chance to satisfy their need for speed at this 5,000 sq. meter go-kart track, the largest in Asia, with free admission all day. Pay nothing, drive fast, and then if it all doesn't go so well, take solace in the sizable bar and order up a Tsingtao (RMB35) and bites like "Pit Lane Chili" and "Blown Out Potato Skins".

Gin & Tonic Night @ The Fennel Lounge: Always committed to creative cocktails, Fennel Lounge devotes Wednesday nights to the gift that is the Gin & Tonic. Mixologist Ivan Sun prepares a variety of specially infused versions that include Mango Butter, Pineapple Thyme, Spicy Thai Essence and Coriander. Head over between 9pm and 1am to drink up to the smooth sounds of artists iAmalam, an electronic performance duo.

THURSDAY

Punchline Comedy Club - Whose line is it Anyway? @ The Hacienda: Fans of the British improv comedy Whose Line Is It Anyway? are in for a treat as The Hacienda gets ready to host three nights of live comedy performances by some of the show’s stars including Andy Frost, Stephen Steen, Stephen Frost and Ian Coppinger. Expect the funniest comics, the hottest music, and a guaranteed good time. RMB290

Aperitivo @ Pizza Marzano (Surpass Court): The newest location of one of our favorite pizza joints entices you to get your weekend wind-down started a little early with half off selected glasses and bottles of wine every Thursday and Friday evening. FRIDAY

Splitworks Presents The Pains of Being Pure at Heart @ MAO Livehouse: Local promotion team Split Works has done Shanghai a solid by bringing in the soft-crooning, hard-rocking indie-pop group The Pains of Being Pure at Heart for what is sure to be a kick-ass show. Local band Boys Climbing Ropes will get in on the action, making this a major early music highlight of 2012. Tickets are RMB120 in pre-sale, RMB150 at the door.
