Bowling Fun for the Whole Family: Orden Bowling Center
Kathy G. and the Yew Chung International School Daisy Girl Scouts (ages 5-7) went to The Orden Bowling Center to let the kids experience this fun game. Here is Kathy's report on how it went.
With many fond childhood memories of family bowling, hitting the lanes has long been on my bucket list of things to do with my kids. When the opportunity came up to take eight Daisy Girl Scouts (ages 5 to 7) bowling, I was happy for the chance to introduce the girls to the sport.
Bowling alleys offer families a place where: a) they can move indoors out of nasty weather, and b) the constant thwack of tumbling pins blends nicely with the exuberant noises that kids make when released in a public place. Not all bowling alleys are family-friendly, however.
Orden Bowling was a pleasant surprise. It’s funny how we’ve walked right by the giant bowling pin on Hengshan Lu dozens of times without ever noticing it. Clean, brightly lit and smoke-free, Orden offers two lanes outfitted with gutter bumpers to make it easier to hit the pins for little kids. For these two lanes, you can call ahead to reserve (in Chinese), or just show up. During the afternoon and evening hours, the cost is RMB20 per person per line of bowling. Discounts may apply in the mornings if it isn't crowded.
Regularly disinfected rental shoes are available, but in limited quantities for little feet. I would advise bringing an extra pair of thick socks in case your kids bowl without shoes on.
In addition to bowling, you can also play arcade games, shoot pool and enjoy soft drinks (RMB10) or light snacks. Since we were celebrating a birthday, we were also able to bring in our own cake. Sold by the bottle, beer (RMB15), wine (RMB150 and up) and hard liquor (RMB350 and up) are also available for grown-ups.
All in all, Orden is a fine place to get started with bowling while you’re in Shanghai. In fact, the girls unanimously declared that they had fun and would definitely go again.
