Shanghai's Best Milkshakes

Craving a creamy and delectable milkshake? Check out these places where you can get the classic American beverage and start shakin'!

Munchies | American
Munchies’ plumpifying milkshakes come in a few varieties, including the standards (chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, RMB18-19) and a few mixes (strawberry banana and chocolate banana, RMB22), but our favorite is the peanut butter and chocolate milkshake (RMB22). Best described as a liquid Reese’s peanut butter cup, the presentation is what you’d expect from Munchies: no frills, no whipped cream on top, just simple, delicious, chocolaty indulgence. This shake wasn’t as thick as some of the others we tried, but it was a full-on flavor blast that left us wanting more.

Bistro Burger | American
Bistro Burger’s version of this childhood favorite is all grown up. They’ve added a few shots of coffee and caramel liquors to the rich combination of vanilla ice cream and bourbon in Grandma’s Treat (RMB45), ensuring that we felt no pain as we worked our way through the sumptuous shake ... and then the Italian Job (vanilla with a kick of sambuca, RMB45) and then the Nutty Professor (RMB50), made with real pieces of cream cheese cake and a generous serving of amaretto. In addition to their spiked shakes, Bistro Burger also has virgin variations for the little ones and non-alcoholics.

Carl’s Jr. | American
Carl’s Jr. is the quintessential fast food establishment: the burgers, the fries, the impossibly thick milkshakes. The shakes come in four flavors, and the Oreo (RMB22) variation that we chose was so dense that we had trouble slurping it up through the straw. Of course, we were more than happy to spoon the hand-churned ice cream concoction into our mouths. If you’re a true fatty, pair it with an order of waffle fries for the perfect hot-cold, salty-sweet combo.

I am not a sponsor for Gourmet Burger but they do a really good chocolate milkshake. You can still make a great homemade one with a quarter of a 60 RMB tub of Haagen Dazs belgian chocolate and stir into milk, so it will cost you about 15 RMB for a luxury shake.
