Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang (M. BUTTERFLY) and award-winning director Leigh Silverman discuss their collaborations on and off Broadway, including their recent production of YELLOW FACE -- a humorous memoir of the author's 20-year search for Chinese American identity -- which earned two OBIE Awards and was short-listed for the 2008 Pulitzer Prize. Moderated by Ken Smith, Performing Arts Critic (Asia) for the Financial Times.

David Henry Hwang’s work includes the plays M. BUTTERFLY, GOLDEN CHILD, YELLOW FACE and FOB; the Broadway musicals AIDA (co-author), FLOWER DRUM SONG (2002 revival) and DISNEY’S TARZAN; and opera libretti for Philip Glass’ THE VOYAGE, Osvaldo Golijov’s AINADAMAR (two 2007 Grammy Awards) and Bright Sheng’s THE SILVER RIVER. He also penned the feature films M. BUTTERFLY, GOLDEN GATE, and POSSESSION (co-writer). Hwang is a Tony Award winner and three-time nominee, a three-time OBIE Award winner and a two-time Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama.

Leigh Silverman has directed more than fifteen world premiere productions including on Broadway, two Pulitzer Prize finalists, and a musical. In New York: Manhattan Theatre Club, Manhattan Class Company, New York Theatre Workshop, Playwrights Horizons, The Public Theater, Primary Stages. Regionally: The Huntington Theatre (Boston, MA), Seattle Repertory Theatre, Center Theater Group (LA, CA), Berkeley Repertory Theatre and the Goodman Theatre (Chicago). She directed WIT on London’s West End. Her first collaboration with David Henry Hwang was YELLOW FACE. Hwang and Silverman are currently collaborating on a new work.
