Two galleries, a cafe and offices combine to make this small but energetic art space. The programs include exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and symposiums, art competitions and art-film festivals, all of which aim to encourage intellectual collaboration between Contemporary artists and art enthusiasts both Chinese and foreign.

Description -
The Elisabeth de Brabant Art Space is a platform for dialogue and creative vision around Chinese Contemporary Art. Complete with two galleries, office spaces and café, the Elisabeth de Brabant Art Space is a venue for dialogue and creative vision around Chinese Contemporary Art. The programs include exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and symposiums, art competitions and art-film festivals, all of which aim to encourage intellectual collaboration between Contemporary artists and art enthusiasts both Chinese and Foreign.
The art center is housed in an unmistakably Shanghainese building, overflowing with history, charm and charisma; each of the exposed bricks that make up the soaring walls still hold the original stamped signature of the artisan that crafted them. The four-story town house was stripped back to its rudiments and carefully restored brick by brick to create the Art Centre, Shanghai City’s most unavoidable contemporary art destination. The building’s true meaning and historical allure run parallel to Elisabeth de Brabant’s vision for the art works it houses.

@narsfweasels you said it exactly right. That is precisely what I meant. Thank you.
@click37 my review said that I have been there and I have heard the fake blonde owner talking about her fake sounding background and trying to make it sound important. I was not convinced then and I am not convinced now. I even commented on the many exhibitions I have seen in passing...... just 1 or 2 of the artists are OK. However you have not even been there so how can you comment on it?

-
@ Narfs, ok well thats straight enough and at least you're saying you met the owner... not just a drive by mouth-shooting.

@click37
I think the implication is -and I'm taking this from my own experience with the owner as well- in that she's taking absolute rubbish, coating it in a veneer of pretentiousness and exclusivity, and then pretending that it is somehow worthy of our consideration. And that by doing this, she is making the world a better place.

@ heydenc... ok so your second review since you joined in june, but it's not a review, you don't actually say you went in or what you have seen?
Owner is a fake? based on what? The owner was featured on one of the ICS programe's a couple of day's ago so I am assuming that they did some research and that what was claimed was based on fact, so again what are you claiming is fake? Her name? Her hair colour? Her age?
Never been to the gallery myself but had put it on the list after the tv program and not put off by a non-review but intrested in what you actually saw if anything?

This is a small gallery with a single artist showing for at least several weeks or months then change to another one. From what I have seen when passing it has 1 or 2 OK artists but most of the time nothing interesting. I have also heard the owners trying to talk about the art like it is something special. But fancy talk and saying about one's own background, which sounds completely false to me, does not convince many people. I would hardly call it a great exhibition space or the owner gracious. I would call it is a small exhibition space with a fake owner. I guess it shows how fake self reviews can differ from real reviews. Interesting how there are several positive reviews of this place from people who have joined to just write a single positive review of this place. Have you ever joined a website just to write a review of a small art gallery? That says something... this place doesn't even receive any positive reviews so the owners have to write about it themselves. I would have probably given it 3 stars which is merely average but the self reviews are pitiful. So just 2 stars.

Beautiful brick house in the French Concession area. There’s always a very nice, elegant collection on display. One time, I got to meet the owner Elisabeth, who’s a gracious American lady, at one of their exhibition openings. Yes, it’s contemporary art, but expect to find Chinese traditional art influence. One of the better galleries on Fuxing Lu!

I have been to this gallery a few times, and always enjoy my visits. The building is beautiful and the original brick walls are a nice change from all the "white cube" galleries. The Hung Liu exhibition showing now is gorgeous-I had never heard of the artist before but her pieces are absolutely stunning! As for the owner, I have never been to any of her talks, but she and her staff have always been extremely friendly and approachable, and willing to talk about the artists and exhibitions. I will definitely be bringing my friends to this gallery when they visit Shanghai.

nice area. this gallery is the best in the old french quater. too bad i didnt meet the owner but I will come back my next time in Shangahi.

The outside of the building which houses the gallery is nice architecturally. In fact there are many attractive buildings on fuxing and in the french area of Shanghai. Sarah, "Pretentious" is the right word. But you got it a bit wrong, that should be used to describe the owner of the gallery. The pretention is: shallow, while trying to pretend to be deep. I have been to one of her "lectures about art" but it was more like jibberjabber on and on and on from an unqualified housewife whose focus is to try to sound important. Sounding important is not nearly sufficient.
Not recommended that you waste your time.

I went to see the new Liu Beili installation art exhibition at the elisabeth de brabant art center, it is just outstanding, never seen in Shanghai before, the installation called 'lure' on the last floor is so powerful. I warmly recommend it.

I've been to this gallery. It is much too small to be called an 'art center'. The gallery is too pretentious. Looks ok but the art excels at mediocrity.
That said, I must admit that I have seen much worse in Shanghai.

Great exhibition space. Attended an art talk at the center before which was very interesting and enlightening.

I saw the Metamorphosis exhibition. It was very unique. The space has a special atmosphere. It was beautiful.

-
The gallery is pretty good actually, very open space and shows high-end art.

I found the space to be charming - a beautifully renovated old Shanghai house. The current exhibition, Metamorphosis, is unlike I anything I have seen recently in galleries in Shanghai. I recommend.

Elisabeth de Brabant Art Space is a very long name for the art space. It is the show off name and this venue is try to be the show off too. But it is not the recommended place.
This exhibition space is trying to make the hype but it has no substance. Even the gallery's website has only the photos of the launching party has many photos of the owner but it does not have any of substance of the art.

Nice venue indeed. It is a lovely experience, and as a Chinese I am very happy to see this art platform support some young Chinese artists and introduce their art works to us. And the owner speaks Mandarin to us she is very approachable and willing to make an introduction of exhibition to us even though obviously we are not someone looks like be able to afford anything there, hehe.
