This classic pub offers predominantly Western patrons three floors of Americana, affordable draft Tiger and a long-running happy hour. The variety of burgers has been praised as some of the city's finest. Their Mardi Gras étouffée and jambalaya are two southern dishes that are hard to find elsewhere.

Went to Malone's last night and it was pretty much as described in the previous comments, namely:

  1. Mediocre service, the waitresses looked like they really hated their jobs. They were also incredibly rude.

  2. Below Average food - the nachos came out cold and bland, the lime margarita was pretty flavourless and artifically coloured.

  3. The place has seen better days and the décor seems dated, - David Beckham's mural is peeling, the wood on the DJ console is flaking by the sides.

  4. Coffee portion was tiny, overpriced and similar to the kind you would find on airplanes. Oh.. and for some reason it was served with a cut straw instead of a teaspoon.

Just got the impression that wherever there was an opportunity to cut costs, it was done. The nachos was garnished with green chillies (the kind you can find in the wet markets) instead of actual jalapenos.

Shame, cos the menu selection was quite extensive and seemed interesting.

From reading the comments below this defensive attitude of "if you don't like it then don't come back" may work to make management temporarily feel better but it just shows they are missing the ENTIRE point of feedback forums like these.

It seems to me also that management is of the opinion that they can afford to lose 1 customer because they will gain 3 expats looking for an American sports bar serving crappy food and hookers. This is terribly off-putting and makes me even less motivated to give the establishment a second chance.

Coupled with the bad music and pissed-off looking waitresses it was a rather depressing experience altogether.

I tried, but left disappointed. For those sort of prices, I would not go back again or recommend it to anyone.

Ok guys, we need to put a stop to the storm of comments here. Please move the conversation to either one of these blog posts. "Are Shanghai Customers Just Too Demanding - www.cityweekend.com.cn/demanding". Or, "How Should Restaurateurs Respond to Online Criticism? - www.cityweekend.com.cn/criticism". Thanks!

@Narfs, Hm... i guess your right Malones was good 10 years ago... The service has been sucking for a while. If you want good burgers or a bar atmosphere there are just so many other options in town.

You are out of order Malone's!

I suspect you're having a bad day, but calling customers "bleating babies" is completely the wrong way to deal with it.

And in fact, why don't you just make sure this kind of unpleasant situation doesn't happen in the future? Prevention is better than cure.

If someone smacks you in the head and then they say sorry, does it hurt less? No.

So take the boxing gloves off, sit down with your staff and make with the training.

@ Malone. How's your Pudong branch doing? Suzhou? Going strong, huh? lmao! BTW, The purpose of these forums is to give a heads up to would be customers as to what's what on the Shanghai scene. I for one appreciate when CW users give me the goods -- or the dirt-- on a place I'm thinking of going to. One user posted a review about a rude waitress. In my experience in the hospitality industry, rudeness comes from weak company culture, a lack training, and absentee management. It is systemic, and in case you missed the previous review, your managers are part of the problem too. And now, you're being belligerent. Defensive. An scared little boy. You want to slap your customers around online and talk yourself up? Bad decision. Get ready. Here comes the storm, punk.

We have gone over this time and time again. If your being spoken to rudley then ask for a manager instead of whining on a website like a bunch of cowards later. If you dont want to come back then dont come back. Threatening this to us will not make us beg and beg. We have been here for 18 years and still going strong. A few odd comments here and there will not send us to the brink of bankruptcy.. Please inform a manager if this happens to you again and we can sort it out on the spot otherwise do everyone a favour and stop bleating like babies on websites. Thanks Malone`s

I must agree with the last few people to post on here. Malone's is the place to go if you want to be treated like garbage by your waitress.

Vote Malones #1 for rudest waitress in SH. Nice food and have been a regular for years but it was either her or me and they lost a customer. The manager takes #1 for rudest manager as well. To be clear great food but not worth the hassle from the staff. Other places serve food in SH.

A generally hipster crowd, to be honest. Pretty family oriented in the daytime. Wonderful burger night on Monday and a hotdog night on Tuesdays (I think?). However, service is total rubbish. The waitresses are very snappy, and one of them who appears to be somewhat competent in English is so unbelievably rude (and definitely the most $!@#ing unbearable one I've ever met). I'll restrain myself from further comments on that particular waitress. The food is good for what it is and affordable though.

The place has become a victim of its success on monday nights. Pretty hard to get a table after 7pm, the service is getting worse, and I'm not only talking about the new waitresses who seem lost but also the other regular waitresses who are just bad as usual (most of them). I wouldn't mind if the service was the only problem, but the burgers also lost in quality, last time many of my friends complaint that their patty was cold, mine was just warm enough but still not great. And when I read "malone's house burger: loaded with cheese", I'm expecting a fair amount of cheese in my burger, not just a small square of cheese fighting with 3 mushrooms on a lukewarm patty...

Malone's Monday special is one of the greatest deal special in Shanghai. 50rmb for a burger and a free beer, on any other day the burgers range from 70-105rmb. Malones tong ren lu is pretty much the spot to be on a monday from 2-10pm. Though its popular, I must give a thumb up to the waitresses and staff at Malone's. They work very hard to keep everyone happy and ensure speedy delivery of food and drinks. Though one or two waitresses could use some people skills training, the others tend to pick up the slack. 7-9 seem to be the busiest hour when its hard to find seats, and its pretty much every person or group is left to find a seat for themselves.

I recommend this place for a Monday chillaxing time! And there is also a live band after 10pm

Extremely disappointing.

I went with friends for the monday night burger special. My friends burger came out completely raw in the middle. When he complained to staff, they took the burger and microwaved it (yes the whole burger) destroying the ingredients in the process. And it was still under done.

I ordered the steak, rare. Came out completely grey. Might be less annoying if it wasn't so expensive.

There are just so many places to eat in Shanghai with better food which are better value. I don't think I'll waste my time here again.

And they ran out of Coke.

Well, after all the hoo-ha I thought it'd be worth a crack. The result? Meh. But good meh.

The scent of vomit, smoke and stale beer isn't particularly enticing, but hey, these things are sent to try us, and try us they do.

When I walked in, the place was nearly empty at 12, but when I left at 12:45 it was fairly packed. Mostly with Chinese diners enjoying Chinese noodle specials. Good for them.

The Boston "Mini burger" was very nice indeed and came with soup, salad, a few fries, some spicy... thing and a slice of dehydrated melon.

Not sure how you can call it a "Mini Burger" when I felt quite full after eating it, but I suppose you're comparing that with the "Enormous Fat Git Burger" that they serve at Faith's - which is better, by the way. But yeah, cheese, mushrooms, fresh tomato, juicy meaty bits, all very nicely done. A big step up from the emaciated rubbish served at Blue Frog.

There were no problems with the staff, but then again, my order was really simple, came quickly and came without any attitude or fuss.

Would I go back?

...no. The smell is horrible and the whole place feels a bit sticky and smoky for my taste.

Oh and Jeff can you stop whinging. Its a review page for people to leave their opinion on what they thought of Malones good or bad its all about opinion. Its good that Paul takes time for feedback so we can have a discussion. No one suggested this is fine dining and certainly do not expect it at Malones. We are aware of the good food and the good deals and music available at Malones and know service will be slower on a Monday but its our opinion. If some guy thinks he should get more ketchup and less attitude then thats his opinion the same as if someone really enjoyed brunch. So why don't you STFU and let people review Malones.

Hi Scott I couldnt see any question to answer in Renes post. It was all comments from what i can see. However to answer your question : Staff are a difficult thing in China now, they are so well protected by the labour bureau and cannot easily be fired. Staff will also change jobs at the drop of a hat for an extra Rmb100. Malones is constantly re-training staff and unfortunately some learn quicker than others. Some have bad days (like we all do). Some have different ideas about work and hard work. A lot of it is a cultural thing. There is no easy answer. I have had good service from some certain bars and restaurants and the next day its been unbelievably bad. Malones is not perfect, we strive to be but we are not. I dont know of any place that is. We just hope that if you have a bad experience that you inform a Manager there at the time and we can sort out any problem on the spot rather than have to write about it on the public domains the next day.

1 year, 1 month ago

scott8446

To be honest Paul you never really answered Renes question just pointed out things in her post that are false.

The question is why for the last four or five years has Malones continually hired bad waiting staff and why is the problem not been sorted?

Wagas can manage to continually hire good staff in many stores.

Hi Rene Thanks for your comments. There are some good points there and some we will definitely look over in our weekly meetings for sure. Couple of points to correct you on though. WE only employ ONE Filipino waitress and she works evenings and there is no "lady in charge on the 2nd floor" We have a male Daytime Manager and a male daytime supervisor.

ONce again if anyone does have any problems with anything to do with Malone`s, we do take each complaint very seriously and i promise you that it does get looked into and all emails are sent directly to the owners too. My email for any problems is paul@malones.com.cn

I find Malone's situation extremely interesting. Worth writing a business case about managing Asian staff. Management seems attentive and willing to change. They respond immediately to any complaint. Unfortunately their staff seems to don't listen to them. I have been complaining and hearing other people complain about Malone's for a while and it's always the same pattern, management promises action and nothing happens. I have been a loyal patron of the Tongren Road location for almost 4 years and have rented out their third floor a couple of times for company events. During this time I've noticed that most of their waitresses are Filipino and have been doing the job for a while(I can tell who are the meanest ones). In the other hand revenue is good, patrons keep coming , the owner must be reluctant to rock the boat. I wouldn't like to speculate is there is any other reason why the staff behaves in such a way, but you can feel that they have that kind of attitude that nothing can change. Minor issues like the ketchup scarceness could be solved in easy ways. Blue frog has a ketchup bottle over every table. Malone’s does not have to go that far; placing a bottle on the bar would avoid waste and still satisfy the gluttons like me. Staff-wise, If managers have been unsuccessfully trying to change their behavior for such a long time I don’t see other option than getting rid of the current crew and infusing new blood. I would suggest you start by the lady in charge of the 2F aside the bar corner-window-coach.

bad bad bad customer service. they seems to ONLY serve the laowai so much better and forgo the presence of other Asians in the restaurant. it took them SO long to get me one more set of cutlery and an extra cup cos i wanted to share my cup of coke with my friend. and when they gave me the cutlery and the cup...that particular waitress practically just shoved it to me very rudely. i was like...is this how you treat customers?!

i ordered the set burger meal....and i wasn't really impressed by it. the patty was overcooked and wasn't really warm when it was served to me. perhaps the waitresses were busy walking around (other than attending to customers' request) and forgot to serve my food. it took them about 30mins for my food to arrive. that's too long and it wasn't really crowded when i was there during the early evening. worse still...asking for ketchup is like begging the waitresses. the first time i ask...i was served a less-than-a-sachet- amount of ketchup! i thought i could ask again..and when i did...i was met with a disgusting snub by the waitress. i mean come on..does taking more ketchup hurts you? and they took ages to get me another

totally disappointed on my first visit...but i would say it's a good chill out place (to watch the sports channels) i want to be back again...but i dunno if i should. i don't want to be treated like i've owed the waitresses a million dollar.

Just returned from Thumb Plaza Malones. Had a great evening until the bill came and was completely wrong, after 10mins complete confusion from staff we informed them what we had ordered and fixed the bill. Everytime we go here the night or lunch is spoilt by bad service and have decided not to try Malones again. When you make a complaint and are treated like you pissed on the servers xmas presents you know its time to call it a day.

I went a couple of times recently, and couldn't eat the burger. The bread tastes like Chinese margarine and it is really disappointing when you see the prices. The ambiance is good but indeed it gets quite packed after six. I would recommend better to go to Taikang lu where they serves the best burgers for a lot cheaper, even though I still believe Malone's is a nice place to have a drink with friends (but only if you come early :-) ). It just depends what you expect of your evening.

Hi Xiaotqin This is Malone`s. Sorry, your right, it does say Sea Bass, I was reading a older menu that said "Cod Fillets". I have asked the Chef and he said that all the sea bass fillets come in fresh and then we batter them and then freeze them then cook them to order. He is pretty sure that all the fillets are from sea bass fish and we have not had any complaint before about our fish and chips. However please contact me and let us invite you to try them again on us. paul@malones.com.cn

Hi Xiaotqin Sorry to hear that you were unimpressed with our fish and chips. Its a very popular item and being a Brit i eat it regularly. The menu itself does not state that it is Sea Bass. It says "3 cod fillets hand battered then fried golden brown....." Maybe you were told wrongly that we served Sea Bass. Please send me an email about what happened and then let me invite you back for a dinner and some drinks on the house to make up for your food. paul@malones.com.cn

Went on the recommendation of a colleague for the fish and chips - yech! Guys: please take that OFF of the menu or at least serve the fish that is advertised! No foreigner wants to eat the muddy-flavored local fish--most definitely it was not the sea bass like it says on the menu. Very disappointing. Also very hard to get the attention of waitstaff even though 3 or 4 of them hovered around the counter fiddling around with things; anything but customers! Went to use the toilet but there was a huge flood coming out into the restaurant from there with an ayi doing something in there...this was kind of a sad first visit but I would be willing to come to try the March burger special. I would hope a burger would be better than the fish!

Sorry to jump in on this aswell Malones but it is true that you tend to get some of the rudest service in town at the Malones on Tongren Lu.

I've heard good things about the Thumb plaza location, but I guess it doesn't get as busy as your downtown location.

Food still excellent for a taste of home, but I prefer to Sherpas your food these days, the delivery guys will always at least try a smile...

Yes indeed , it was a waitress , my native is spanish and i messed up the genders.... It was that mean filipino girl, that's the reason why i wrote down the exact location of the table, guess mgmt. can easily track who was responsible for that table and tell her that she is not doing customers any favor by taking the order and bringing the drinks and that the crew would be more than happy to tip her with a 50 or even a 100 (10 yuan each) for not ruining our burger night.

Calling the manager? The waiter looked so mean that I was afraid she was going to spit on our following drinks if i ask her to bring the manager over. not kidding .

Besides, please get some extra chairs, during monday night you can spot empty tables without chairs , groups pack on the tables and take the chairs from other tables, or some bar stool could make the job and wont take much space.

ok, i wil send an email.

Went there again last monday ; hope the douche they have running the place reads this and does something ! Were sitting with friends, 2nd. floor to the right side of the bar (round sofa aside the window just in the corner). The waiter gave us a tiny little plate of ketchup and refused to give us any extra portions, that plate is definitely not enough , it's roughly the equivalent to 2 mcdonalds sachets . Even when I order mcdonalds and ask them to add some extra ketchup they do it!

Meat again undercooked, and as usual, for crowning the night a chunk of "something" in my last beer!

I take the time for complaining because this place is 5 min. walk from home. That's the only reason I keep going there, and I hope the the owner quickly fires this d-bag and hires a professional to run the place,; just as it was before.

There aren't many choices around there, its either being surrounded by hookers or going to Malone's.

Wish the owner takes action!

We used to go religiously every Monday until the situation was unbearable.. At the beginning we understood they were busy, at the end it was just too much. They have the rudest waiters in town, the owner/ manager doesn't seems to be around. What a way of breaking a gold pot. Thee last monday night we went we didn't get cutlery, ketchup, tabasco and napkins. The beer glasses were dirty and foul smelling. The meat patty was way too undercooked. And if this sounds bad , the worst was the waiter, seems like they are sleeping with the owner/manager or there is something very weird going on; because i cant see any other way that they tolerate their behaviour. This place has been around for a while but there is obviously something stinky going on their management; they knew how to do things and had a service standard, but it seems like since 4 months ago the place is run by the waiters and no the manager. DO NOT go unless you want to ruin your night., even in an orphanage the waiters have better attitude than here.. Ah, and forgot the GF full of hookers. Wah, anyways I only used to go on monday's. Monday Burger Night R.I,P.

I've been here a few times for their buy one get one half off deal. The deal and the selection of burgers they have are great, but their burgers fail to impress me. The hamburger patty was overcooked and we were overlooked by the waitresses. The waitress didn't understand when I asked her for ketchup in English and when I asked again in Chinese, it took her 10 minutes to get it.
I don't know about you, but when you work at a place that specifically caters to expats, you should get your basic food vocabulary down. Honey Dijon Mustard I'll excuse, but come on Ketchup? Also expect confusion and order mix-ups when you come in a large group.

No one has kept a secret about Monday night here and since I'm gone for the summer, enjoy it. I usually won't spend 80 RMB on a burger - so the deal they have going is great - come earlier (6ish) to make sure you get a seat because the place fills up. Along with the (1/2 off?) and 1 free drink deal they run with the happy hour until 8 so you can get a nice buzz and go to bed early.

I figure they are competing with Blue Frogs Monday deal but they have a totally different atmosphere and much better food for the money.

All that said, I wouldn't really make it a destination unless it was Monday.

I have been in here 3 times over the past 2 months for events on the 3rd floor and I can't say how poorly managed they are. Running out of beer, not having dartboard pens, broken lighting and staff that is clueless on how to fix all these problems. Somebody needs to step it up in here, going downhill too fast.

-Culinary disgust- I had a chance (can't say it was a pleasure) to have a lunch at Malone's on Tongren Rd. I ordered a burger + french fries and a "mineral water" (30 RMB for local purified water !!! - it is called mineral water in their menu) as a drink. I was served with plate full of badly smelling fried stuff with not very fresh lettuce and two slices of tomato where one had a rotten specks on the peel. I ate a few fries and I started feeling bad on my stomach immediately. My friends had same problems. We all had fries. Remembering stories about recycled oil used in many local restaurants I decided to enter the kitchen and look at the oil they used for frying my fries. I talked to the manager first that I want to see the kitchen as I'm heaving a lunch and I'm already feeling sick. He was pretty nervous but agreed to let me glance on their kitchen. I went there and soon regret it very much. Although they tried to stop me I went all the way down to the place where they were frying the fries and what I saw there is impossible to describe. Can't say if this very dark liquid was an oil at all. I called the food inspection in Shanghai (962727 - very nice folks) and let them know about my findings. As food quilt may improve a little after my call, this place will remain on my black list for good.

It's nice to escape China once in awhile, and you'll find that in Malone's American Cafe. It's basically a big building housing a pub, but they serve up great food as well. It's a fab place to chill out after work and grab a dinner and beer. The atmosphere also reminds me very much of the pubs in Australia, which is why I really like Malones.

The Malones burgers are normally priced at 80元 which are really pricey to me, but now they have a "Any burger & a pint of Tiger beer for 50元" Monday promotion that is just flat out AWESOME. One impressive thing is that they do NOT compromise on the size or quality of the burger during this promotion - we thoroughly enjoyed ours. If anything, I find them a bit TOO more-ish! The burger patties are so thick that you're left with a nicely-filled belly at the end of the meal.

My Mushroom Swiss burger is my absolute favourite burger at Malones. The soft bun encasing a luscious THICK beef patty that is juicy, full of flavour, and cooked to perfection. The Swiss cheese is pretty generously heaped on top of the patty and there is also a very decent serving of sliced mushrooms on top. The combination makes the burger ultra juicy, meaty, and delicious. I LOVE it.

The Super Supreme burger is a fantastic deal because the regular price is even more expensive, but it's still part of the promotion. It comes out piled high with... just about everything, it seems ;) A thick patty, with bacon, onions, jalapenos, egg, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, cheese. WHEW!! It's tough to get it into your mouth, but Chris manages and declares it "awesome".

Their coleslaw is a small portion in a little glass bowl and is fine, but could have been served with a little less sauce. I was initially disappointed that their fries consisted of only a small handful (I need a big bowl to satisfy my belly) but it turned out it was sufficient as the burger was so filling. The fries were a little overcooked as I prefer my fries softer, so next time I'll go for the wedges. Options for baked potato or corn-on-the-cob instead would be excellent though.

Their portions are perfect for medium-to-big eaters, since the pint of beer also helps wash everything down. There's a lot of staff there, so we were well attended to and they were friendly and prompt with our food.

Thumbs up - we'll be back!

It's a good burger but a touch pricey at 80rmb. Fries were a disappointment as they were re-fried and the service was borderline rude and very inattentive.

The live music is great in the evening ....but it's a shame that so many hookers hang out here.

This was the only place to get a burger back in the mid 1990's.

Today, it's still kicking, and the burgers are amongst the best in Shanghai (way better than overrated Blue Frog, but I like the Hooters burgers best).

If you are Jonesing for a Burger, these guys deliver through Sherpa's I think.

they have had the best burgers consistently for nearly 14 years now and even though we only go there every 3 or 4weeks they are still a damn site better than frog bamboo and the diner, the asian dishes are sometimes a bit hit and miss according to the better half but all in all a good place for some home cooking from home

Wide selection on lunch sets, but not too many vegetarian options.

It's a very good burger (for Shanghai). Better than Arch. Better than Big Bamboo. Better than Blue Frog.

Good choice of toppings which make for some interesting combos.

Breakfast offers a wide variety of tradtitional American choices. The pancakes are better than the egg dishes. But it's a solid selection all around for a big weekend breakfast.

Good brunch menu, all american standard offerings. HUGE portions so go hungry. The bloody mary is good, extra spicy just the way I like it!
