Description

A Modern French Eatery by Paul Pairet. Classy, not stuffy, and relaxed, without sacrificing an ounce of chic. Service is family-style, recast for a modern table, and the wine list includes 32 wines by the glass. Especially notable is their foie gras crumble and the to-die-for lemon&lemon tart --it's a flavor trip unlike any other.

My own comments made me go back to Mr & Mrs Bund! The food was still great. But the service has gone severely downhill just like so many restaurants in Shanghai. I can't give it less than 4 stars, though, since the fresh bread with tuna spread, starters, mains and that lemon dessert were all superb.

Truly one of the best restaurants in the city. The food is excellent. The service is superb. The only thing I would critique would be some of the tacky furniture, but that's a minor thing.

Dropped by for lunch for the RMB250 (+50 for the lemon tart) three course lunch menu. In short, the lunch menu is an excellent deal for the quality of food. We had the truffle salad and salmon to start, cod and scallops for our mains, and the cheesecake and lemon tart for desserts, respectively. All in all a satisfying and value conscious meal; however, none of the items were particularly memorable as I tend to judge dishes on whether I would want to return to the restaurant just to have that one item again. If I were pressed, I would say the truffle salad was above par, but you can scatter or drizzle truffle/oil on anything to taste good.

Given the hype, I expected the lemon tart to be outstanding; unfortunately, the dessert was on the sweeter side and a bit contrived. It was reminiscent of a dessert I had at Jade on 36 eight years ago so I found it neither progressive nor surprising.

Still, I would give the restaurant 4 stars for the value of the lunch menu and quality of the food in comparison to the other fine dining establishments here.

Way overated! Flintstone rib was tough and fatty. And needed salt! When I asked for more sauce....it never showed up! Is there gold dust in there? And picnic chicken is now boring too....and salmon service was thinly cut as almost transparent I was so thin....and worst is the wine list. This is a boring list that is SO overpriced I felt ripped off buying 1000 rmb wine that costs 15 euros back home. Why are all these diners acting like sheep????

Try night deal 200 rmb with 2 dishes (starter and maincourse) Asparagus and Parmesan cheese and Beef Tartar. The first one excellent choise of Asparagus variety xl size, crunchy perfectly cooking and great match with Parmesan cheese maybe for cheese need more Aged one is too soft and don' t look really Parmesan. Second one is Classic French dishes ,simple presentation, good flavour and fresh ,side dishes potatoes well cooking . Overall good service ,modern French food, excellent value, nice view ...next time i will try a la carte menu for sure :)

The price is actually OK, you're in Shanghai its at the bund your eating michelin caliber food. With that price i think its quoted farily well. The food is fairly consistent and its my personal favorite place for my 4th meal. They opened till 4am on Friday and Saturday serving the same as their lunch menu. A few misses but lots of good things i can talk about on the food. The long short rib teriyaki was awesome, but not very filling for two. The lemon tart is a major hit- i understand why this lemon tart wins awards... The major problem with the place is service. I understand they try to make it a casual "hip and fun" atmoshpere. But c'mon your waiters slouch, side chat, and some even dance to the music.... really? Its a bit too chillaxing... Makes me want to apply for a position there. But Its a great place for a date, impress out of town guests or just a casual dinner to eat with friends. Highly recommend it. everything is good besides the service and having them come up to tell me not to take pictures after i've taken 20. typtical Shanghai experience. This is an update on my previous review. Space is limited here on Cityweekend, but I will say that this is an IMPORTANT UPDATE to read.

I spoke with the management at MMB for which they had issues a formal and sincere apology for the muff ups on my birthday. They had gone on to humbly admit mistakes on their end, and a simple problem in process flow which through extra-ordinary circumstances took place on that night, as well as to explain more accurately what they have on offer.

They DO, infact, STILL have the 2/3 course 200/250rmb set menus after 11p.m. as well as the corresponding happy hours. My main intent in writing my previous review, was to yes, touch upon an unpleasant evening, but more so to inform people of the loss of something truely great in Shanghai. Needless to say however, this is no longer the case, and Mr. and Mrs. Bund actually had no intention of removing their menus, it was a simple matter of wrong execution by isolated staff on that one evening.

As everything goes, I'll say simply, that this is one of the few establishments in the city that is worthy of loyalty. I have, for such a long time, brought friends and travelers to this establishment usually on a night out after BR, and am glad to say that this will remain the case.

In the short month since the incident, service has improved dramatically, and of course, you are pretty much safe with whatever you choose, as all of the dishes I have had there save for one have been outstanding.

Recommended, not only for their quick and attentive care to fix wrongs in a graceful manner, but because it is for all intents and purposes, a quality establishment.

Kudos.

The salmon is still great but condiments getting less...the picnic chicken is still silky and luscious but the long short rib was flavorless as we needed salt, salt, salt...what happened to that delicious demi-sauce they serve with this dish? wine list needs help...all the same crap you see at every other western restaurant in town and marked up 3-4X from NYC...crazy. Service is routine as the staff looks tired and bored...the place is still busy but PAUL....we need some new dishes!!!!!!

A-mazing. My husband and I have a hobby of occassionally treating ourselves to dinner at "fine dining" restaurants. We've done this in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Washington DC, Shanghai, Beijing, New York City, Miami. I have to say this restaurant ranks as probably the most memorable and delicious for me. I liked the "tapas" style menu because it meant that everyone at the table - 4 of us - could try everything. I liked that the owner, Paul Pairet, walked around the restaurant, stopped by and said hello, and served us our salt encrusted fish. Most of all I loved the food. I also liked that we were celebrating my husband's birthday and they gave a complimentary cake, with a giant sparkler shooting out of it, turned off the lights and played the Star Wars theme when they presented it, quite coincidentally, very appropriate for him. I now live in Beijing and when I go back to Shanghai, I will go here.

I loved MMB. I was there on average 2-3 times a month, and occasionally for a lunch or two. It was fancy... but not TOO fancy. It represented a perfect balance between accessible pricing, nice food, and a generally "alright package". This place was "COOL" to go to late at night, even without a particular occasion. I've planned 3 birthday parties there this past year and as such had other friends subsequently become fans.

But now to all our lament, MMB has lost it's proper place in the city. 888rmb set menus puts it on par with many other $$$$$ venues in the city, and now there is very little to set it apart. You've got stellar service and innovation at Jing'An, an overall superior if not historical experience at M, a terrific ambiance at Jade on 36, truly finely made cuisine at Stiller's, and noteworthy french cuisine at Maison Pourcel.

What do we have at MMB except some shrimp in a bottle and mayonnaise with your chicken in a round bowl? Am I biased by my birthday experience? Yes. But when I come to a fine dining institute, I have a certain level of expectation, not just with the food, but the service as well. And having worked in the F&B industry myself, I KNOW full well the difference between horrid, bad, ok, good, exceptional, and LEGENDARY customer service.

If I force myself out of bias and into reason, then this is what I have to say finally. MMB is not the most expensive meal I've had. But when I compare it, to others in a similar vein, I'd say that MMB fails. The niche it once held is what made it special and kept me coming back (as I suspect it did with many, because it wasn't uncommon to see a crowd on any given night during the week, but this night it was me and another table). As a young professional, I recognized it's value and unique value. Now, I suppose MMB can be relegated to that short list of places that one can go to one "special occasions"... or perhaps not.

If MMB doesn't reclaim what it once had, I hope some other dining entrepreneur on the bund takes up the notion of welcoming the late night masses, AND TREATING THEM WELL.

After reading so many rave reviews I had to see for myself... Took a group of people there for a celebration dinner. We were met by the front door staff with smiles and warmth. Proceeded to the bar and had some great unique drinks. Then into dinner - which is selected via one of the most extensive and detailed menus I've seen in a while. Being split into two sections - one for new comers and another for experienced diners - means it's difficult to go wrong in selecting something fantastic.

And fantastic it was! The lobster steamed in a glass jar - amazing! Oysters - perfect! By far the tastiest dish we sampled were the signature frog legs. Wow. Combine all this with lots of great wine (Stag's Leap), attentive service and a nice outdoor patio section for views (and smoking) - and WOW. All previous positive reviews are totally warranted. And we'll be heading back for more, soon! Now officially one of my (if not THE) favorite restaurants in Shanghai.

For starters, I had the seared pomelo foie gras, which I honestly didn't quite fancy. I wasn't very accustomed to the taste of the fruit, but the foie gras portion was generous and fresh.

I also had the aero mash as a side, but was not very impressed by the fluid texture of the dish. It hardly tasted like mash, slightly weird, but I suppose could be an acquired taste. It came in a huge bowl, but the mash would collapse after some stirring.

For my main, I shared the beef cheek pot au feu, which was very well presented by a charming waiter Robin. There was a delicious broth served with the beef cheek, bone marrow and potatoes. Great for people with a blander palate.

Ordered the hyped lemon in lemon tart for dessert. It was rather interesting, a fine form of molecular gastronomy representation. However, I would say that this dish is overrated, or perhaps just not my cup of tea.

The price was rather reasonable as compared to other places such as Jean Georges. Slightly over 500RMB/pax.

Good food, but recently two bad experiences. Was there with a client with 7 people, and the maitre started pushing for us to select a standard menu. They had difficulty serving out a la carte for 7 people...... Quite unbelievable. We did not accept that and in the end they were able to do it of course. But the attitude of the maitre was quite rude. This week I tried calling them twice for a reservation for 16 people (major client). An hour before the restuarant opens (17:30) nobody picks up the phone. Not on Monday not on Tuesday. So Wednesday I sent an email requesting a reservation for 16 people preferably at the oval table. Zero response, so a day later I call at night, after 10 times ringing someone picks up. I tell this person I did not get a response to my mail yet but would like to reserve for 16 people. He tells me his manager will call me back and discuss details on what they can do for us. He did not. I guess the business my company (and in this case probably 15,000 yuan revenue) is not interesting for Mr and Mrs Bund. If anyone has a good tip for me for a large business dinner, I would welcome that. This station is herewith passed.

Took the advice of a Shanghainese friend and visited M&MB for lunch. No reservation, got a window seat for 2.

Ordered 2 glasses of champagne and were treated to a fresh bottle. Nice. The bubbly should have been significantly colder, though. Seems like no matter where we go in this town, we run into less than optimally chilled champagnes/wines. C'mon, Shanghai!

Overall, the food (salads, risotto, beef, breads) was delicious and exceptional, save for the beef, which, though cooked perfectly, was stringy and tough. I won't elaborate and spoil the fun, but that lemon & lemon tart we both decided chose dessert was pure genius - magic in every way a dessert could be.

As far as the service is concerned: Impeccable. Don't be fooled by the funky decor or the casual and playful waiter outfits; these people are pros and the rest of Shanghai restaurateurs should pay a visit and take copious notes. The wait staff are all in sync w/ the table and one another and perform with precision. At the end of the lunch - and just prior to dessert - as the table was being crumbed by one waiter, a waitress prepared the huge menus for us by flipping through to the appropriate pages and then handed them off to a passing waiter who arrived with them at the table just a moment after the crumber had departed. Clockwork! Also, Shanghai restaurateurs, take note on how M&MB spaces their tables for privacy.

Only a few things keeping this place from 5 stars. We'll be back soon to look for that 5th star.

This was our 8th or 9th visit to Mr. & Mrs. and we still are convinced it is the best food in town!!! Enjoying the two course lunch menu at RMB200 also makes it a great value for the excellent quality of food you can enjoy in the relaxed noon-time environment. Everything was superb in its seasoning, texture and presentation - country pate with the smoky toasted bread, the equally generous portion of beef carpaccio, the duck confit in its light gravy with the side of creamy-est of mashed potatoes and the beef tartar with a side of deliciously rich garlic spinach. Only drawback - we again overdosed on the fresh bread in the continously re-filled basket and dessert will have to wait for another time. Service was prompt and a little fussy, but nice and as expected the kitchen staff was tip-top even during low lunch traffic of the National holiday week.

I finally got to meet the most prominent couple in Shanghai last night, Mr and Mrs Bund. I’m pleased to report that we hit it off. The food here was incredible and it really lived up to the hype. Each dish truly was a flavor explosion! My favorite dish of the night was the charred ciabatta topped with shaved truffles and truffle mouse. I can honestly say that I have never tasted anything like this before in my life. It was buttery, crispy, creamy, tangy, citrusy and mind-bendingly good. The taste was so powerful that it actually made my head spin. It was quite the experience. One of my only criticisms is that some of the meals may have been a little bit too overpowering. I found it hard on the palette to go from one extreme taste to the next. It would have been better to break up some of the dishes with some lighter and more cleansing flavors. Or perhaps our table could have just ordered less… But where’s the fun in that?

I follow the recommendation of leemack: everyone should eat like this once in a while. Simply the best food in town. Creativity and quality comes greatly together. I haven't found any slightest exception after having been there now several times. Unfortunately, still after so many months, the service is behind other restaurants of that league. There are a lot of great and attentive waiters, but there are also always some spiritless guys, e.g., the firstly ordered aperitif came after we payed! Fortunately, we had asked somebody else after some minutes and we got that in time. We will come back ... and back ...

Enjoyed one of the best meals I've ever had in China Thursday night. The manager (Bruno?) and my French friend (a real gourmet kind of guy) consulted on the menu and out came 7 or 8 or the most fantastic dishes I've ever tasted. Steak, foie gras, the insanely good lemon dessert, even the mashed potatoes were excellent. We kicked back a bottle of fantastic wine with and took our leisure on the balcony between courses. Everyone should eat like this one in a while.

This is the worst place for booking...rude.... I had my assistant to call, and they said it was completely booked (spoke Chinese). Then I called...and spoke English...and got a booking (5 minutes apart)...I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT. I don't care how good the food is...I'm doing a no show. I recommend everyone to call and make reservations trying (both language and leave your comments here).

This place charges 300RMB cake-cutting fee if you bring your own cake. So if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary there, either cut your cake on the streets after your meal, or buy the cake from the restaurant (not sure how much they charge though)...

Everything was good until I found out about the exorbitant cake-cutting fees... I know in other countries, such fees do sometimes apply, but at a reasonable US$2-5 per pax... 300RMB is almost 3 times the price of my cake!

PLUS, the french waiter/manager there was kinda condescending when we asked if they can make exceptions for celebrations as such... "if we make exceptions for birthdays, then we will be making exceptions for all cases, because that's when people bring cakes in" well... makes sense, but could have been better received if it wasn't said in such a condescending tone...

My boyfriend made surprise reservations for my birthday last night at both Jean Gorges and Mr & Mrs Bund….undecided where to go. We chose the later because the of bubbly and immediately welcoming atmosphere. We sat at the bar while our table by the window was being prepared and my eyes were constantly entertained by the innovative design and accompanying decorations of the restaurant, a treat in itself. The menu was a little intimidating at first because of the sheer size and multiple categories, but the servers’ knowledge of the menu compensated for our intimidation. The oysters were fresh and the bread some of the best I have had in Shanghai. Unfortunately my Sea Bass was lacking in taste, but the accompanying asparagus was cooked and flavored to perfection. My boyfriend enjoyed his veal but the mashed potatoes outdid most everything at the table! All in all I couldn't have asked for more for my birthday. The food, the atmosphere, and the amazing service with attention to detail made the night.

Brilliantly edgy and fun. Food was also top notch and presented in a fresh fun way. Menu is confusing, almost required an index (or was that not just my imagination, there was a guide to deciphering the menu there!) Fresh new take on stuffy Bund restaurants, a must try!

Predictably Overpriced (it's French and it's on the Bund) Predictably Pretentious (see above)

But I gotta say, the food is actually pretty darn good! Have been twice now, will probably visit many more times, as and when my wallet permits and/or my girlfriend demands.

Mr and Mrs Bund, a modern French restaurant by Paul Pairet - It's a large restaurant overlooking the Bund (and towards Pudong on the other side of the river), with gorgeous chandeliers and a chic black & red luxe decor. The staff wear preppy black and red, complete with cool Converse shoes. I loved how attentive they were, and that they could all speak English.

We settled into the soft seats at our corner table by the window, overlooking the sparkling lights of the Bund. And then we were presented with the menu - a book of a menu! The digest menu placed at the front is for first-timers, which is already a full menu in itself. The rest of the menu is an exhaustive list of various meats, seafood, desserts, etc. We spent about 15 minutes alone looking through the menu trying to figure out what we were going to order ;)

I had small heart attacks as I perused the menu. The place is e-x-p-e-n-s-i-v-e. Even asking for "water please" is expensive, because you get a 80元 bottle of water. YIKES!!! But I bit my tongue because Chris doesn't like me complaining about prices when we're out.. and figured it was my birthday anyway, so what the heck ;)

The food was excellent - lovely cuisine and my favourite by far was the Homemade Duck Foie Gras with Herb Salad - a BIG chunk of creamy, delectable foie gras. Ooooooh la la! I would go back again just for that ;) The mains were also fantastic, it's a real treat to have a perfectly cooked thick steak and a large chunk of moist cod (with no bones) in Shanghai - they're impossible to find in regular restaurants.

We would have really appreciated a complimentary mini birthday cake or something, that's usually the mark of fine-dining restaurants in Australia and sadly, it was missed here. So we ordered our own, but it was not that impressive as the molten chocolate cake was significantly undercooked - there was basically no cake, apart from a wet casing, and there was so much liquid chocolate it was literally just drinking liquid chocolate for our dessert. It tasted fine, but was unimpressive and certainly not worth the money.

Wow what a disappointment... After all the good reviews I show up with the hopes of a good solid meal but was underwhelmed by everything from the service to the food.

Wine list is not even approachable; ~700 RMB for a crap bottle. We went with cocktails; Sazarac and Mrs. Bund Martini. Both of which were good but not Constellation or Kittos great.

Apps: Natural Foie Gras - tasty but is hard to screw it up. Picnic Chicken - Whole chicken breast with a side of foamy mayo aka aioli. Nothing special at all, quite a let down.

Main: Beef Cheek - Okay but not good. Not properly braise and a little dry. Served with a side of foam potatoes which only redeeming quality was the hint of truffles. Veal Shank - Over cooked or just bad cut of meat; quite chewy and lacked flavor. Had some small fried potato pieces + fruit on top which was interesting House Fries aka XXLPP9PP - What the hell is this thing, 50 RMB for you to make a single long french fry that taste like a long tater-tot

With the constant let downs of Shanghai "Fine Dinning", save your money fly to HK and go to Amber or Bo Innovation; you 100% not regret it unlike Mr. & Mrs. Bund

Oh they way they serve the food on on the side of the table, bread quality and the view earned this place the 2 stars

Hi there, The restaurant is amazing and it is really bringing something new to Shanghai restaurant scene. All the details are there, from the plate to the waiters uniform without forgetting the menu which is totally amazing. I have been there 5 time, and I am still dreaming to taste many of the dishes, the menu is so long with so much diversity. Even the most simple thing like ham and cheese pasta or Oyster are the best I have ever eaten in my life. Every single dish is made with premium product and cooked at the perfection with the special touch of the chef, really impressive ! The only negative point is the wine selection which is really poor, they invest a lot into a very good machine for wine by the glass, but 80 % of the wine they put in the machine are very average or some grand cru that no one can afford. They put some very commercial brands like penfolds, marques de riscal, norton , etc...without any interest, wines that you can find in any supermarket. I really don t understand why they bought such a machine to promote so average wines...if you want to order a good wine you should order by bottle, because although they have 20 wine by glass, you would have difficulties to find something interesting. Other restaurants like Franck, el willy, M on the bund or Stillers have a much better wine selection. I am a wine lover and I think they should have put as much heart to build their wine list as they did to build their food menu

Excellent Food - very confusing menu and thank goodness for the first-timer menu! The ambience is casual and so not so approriate for business dinner. We enjoyed the experience - it wasn't cheap (esp that glass of wine!!!) but the food will call for your return again!!!

Last month, for 2 whole weeks, if someone needed to guess where I was next having dinner, they ought to be shot. Literally. Mr & Mrs Bund very quickly became my favourite haunt and for all the glitz and glamour that goes into its location, decor and service, I actually hardly flinch when the bill came! Here's why: -

1) Has anyone noticed how stylishly cool the waiters look in their Converse? They totally give a whole new meaning to "je ne sais quoi". Love. it.

2) How fine is the wine "vending" machine? If that's a scowl I spot on your face, you must be from another planet. You peruse the variety of reds and whites (32, yes I counted), decide how wasted you wish to get in the next couple of hours, pop in the card the cool waiter gave you earlier and there you have it - a beautiful glass of wine in your hands. No kicking or muttering obscenities under your breath like you would with the other silly vending machines at train stations. Everything is so easy with this little gem.

3) The food. So everything is up for sharing. But who wants that? Not me, for a fact! The foie gras (magic). The risotto (genius). The Potato Mash (so who the hell orders mash potatoes? Er.. you do. Especially when it's on this particular menu). The Beef Fillet Carpaccio (oh my gawd. Yum!). And... wait for it.... drum roll The Steamed Black Cod with Truffle New Meuniere. To. Die. For. And have I mentioned the pan roasted Veal Cutlet yet?

3) Drinks. If that vending machine in the middle of the room isn't your "thing", just point at any of their cocktails - with blindfolds on. They all taste amazing.

It's crazy to think why I would stop going back (well, I did stop only because I was going on vacation). It's on the Bund, it's got what I want when I feel like a splurge coming on, the waiters wear better shoes than I do, the vending machine, the great food (they even have a menu for "first timers" - cute!), awesome decor..... Mr & Mrs Bund is definitely making its way into my Top 5 restaurants in Shanghai.

And I hope it does into yours too :)

Smart food. Great views. Horrible wine concept. At 150+++ per glass, customers should not be expected to get up to walk to some wine vending machine for a refill. This system belongs in the Ikea canteen - not in this Bund restaurant with Bund prices.

2nd visit. The service is far too slow and it took a long time for our requests to be met; extra butter, bread refills, water, etc. We were pleased to see that there is an introductory page for 1st timers. The conditions of the menu should be looked into as many pages were getting torn and tattered. The font size of the menu is also too small to read and the lighting too dim. I suggest having bigger wordings and some mini-torches handy for diners.

I enjoyed the house smoked salmon tremendously and it was delicious with the special butter and bread. The Kumamoto ponzu was a bit strange. Some classics should not be meddled with and I feel that good quality oysters in particular should be left as it is; A simple dash of ponzu sauce and chives like a standard japanese style would suffice. The Shrimp jar is good (as usual) and the dipping sauce is a winner.

The lobster in either ginger or thai should be the signature dish here! Fantastic and the execution perfect. The Chateaubriand is magnificent and it was almost tender enough to go through with a fork. It can't get better than this. I strongly recommend a pot of mash potato to go with it.

The filo a la creme was a pleasant surprise. It was so light and delicate. Vanilla pot was also very good. Lemon tart delightful.

Great effort on the team to maintain the standards. The service levels should be better.

New Eats | Tinkering with Our Tongues

Walking into the expansive Bund 18 space, we were expecting a dining experience that would blow every Bund restaurant out of the water. The waiters, dressed in designer velvet and jean get-ups, looked way cooler than we did. The menu offers a leviathan selection of 250 family-style dishes and 32 wines, dispensed from sleek wine machines, by the glass. It’s also the only restaurant in Shanghai where you try a 1989 Château Latour without purchasing the bottle.

We ordered starters with blissful glee. An addictive foie gras crumble (¥90) contained shards of solidified balsamic vinegar, hazelnut and bread atop a layer of apple jelly, and a mousse of truffle-scented foie gras like a high-end version of yogurt and granola parfait. But if this first dish was an example of creative French cuisine done well, then our second appetizer of sashimi melba (¥110) was the polar opposite.

The dish of raw salmon morsels came soaking in soy sauce (we were later told this dish shouldn’t even contain soy sauce), the petite slices arranged haphazardly like leftovers around and on a tube of slippery konbu (seaweed) filled with chantilly cream. Our frisée with lardon and egg (¥90) was much tastier, with a perfectly hard-boiled egg (gooey insides, firm whites), and thick cuts of tender, fatty pork.

For mains, we tried the risotto with goat cheese and basil (¥110), but it was so over salted, we didn’t take a second bite. At least our entrée of veal with truffle new meuniere sauce (¥225) offered a hefty cut of lean, fresh meat and buttery mashed potatoes.

A dish of salmon with vanilla chantilly cream (¥150) came with a juicy, seared fillet. Sheepishly, we admit that our favorite dish of the night was actually a side of potatoes Dauphinois with prosciutto, Yunnan truffles and brie (¥90).

We’ve heard other people rave about this place, but on our visit, the quality of our dishes seemed to fluctuate randomly–perhaps because Pairet himself was not in the kitchen. Maybe we were just expecting too much for a restaurant that had (then) been open two weeks. Mr and Mrs Bund will undoubtedly become a Bund institution–after all, it has killer looks and the hottest chef in Shanghai behind it–but we think the food could benefit from some additional work. From the previous Sens & Bund space, it has gotten more casual and the seating area near the windows have improved, however, the seats are a bit too far apart for quiet conversation. The music is far too loud when the place is starting-up for service, only when the crowds is in, then you can talk like in a bustling chinese restaurant. The kitchen looks the same from the old place and the new wine display cabinet is gimmicky as this is not a self-service wine bar.

The service is needs some specific improvement. The waiter offered to introduce us to the menu and he kept saying that "we have a lot of seafood, we have a lot of meats, we have a lot of items..." After 3 mins, we got tired and lost interest in his "introduction". I think it is great to have such tremendous variety in the menu, though I think it takes far too long to digest the menu and decide on what to order. I suggest having a daily chef's recommendations on the 1st 2 pages for the trusting and "lazy-to-think" diners and the waiter tried to change our plates while we were still eating from it and we were appalled... Please strengthen the training of staff.

I like the idea of sharing food so that we can sample more variety but the tables are wide and the dishes heavy. I believe the chinese got it right with the lazy susan...

The bread basket was excellent, particularly the toast. I thought it might be nice to have a variety of butter and spreads since this place is about variety. the tuna creme is really light and tasty, though the can reminds me of the place across the river...

The lobster is magnificently prepared and I strongly recommend all diners to order it. Try it thai americana style. The beef was also excellent and the flavour of the sauce is sublime with the mash potato. The asparagus was cooked well and the hollandise sauce is foamy and not too heavy. Good fries. The turbot cepes was well executed but the fish itself is not powerful enough to stand on its own. The foie gras and orange tart is too similar to Jade 36's. The dessert selection is not so exciting and I was hoping for a selection of souffles...

I can understand that Paul probably invented all the dishes in J36 but I feel that M&MB should stand on its own without having to rely on past classics or signatures from another restaurant. Some of the pictures in the menu are clearly meant to invoke a sense of similarity from J36. Why? Are you not confident enough in your menu spread to give you your own identity? Or you need your long classics to anchor your menu?

The prices are not too expensive on a per-item basis but because you need to order starters and sides, the bill steadily creeps up. The wine list by the glass has some variety but it is a bit dominated by new world wines. There are some interesting choices such as Palmer 95, Latour and Cos Estonel blanc. Maybe some Burgundy reds should be featured to go with the seafood.

Foodies, please go and try.

A modern French eatery by Paul Pairet. That bit is true. When we arrived in our minigroup of 3 at 7:30pm last saturday the place was just about getting busy. Point one: Whats the deal with those seats? The tables are humongous and you sit so far apart (left and right) that conversation is a bit tiring. It got close to annoying when the room was filled with people later on and the noise level was on the verge of trainstation waiting room.(before i get to the food, who chooses your music guys?? Get an ipod and ditch the 80s pop..please) The service staff (amongst them 2 french young managers) did an excellent job guiding us through the a bit intimidaying menu. Intimidating only if you don't know how to read it. In fact it is varieties of a single item. Good idea, very PP ! The house appetizer or amuse bouche was a tuna creme in a open can served with crispy breadslices. Very foamy in texture and perfectly presented. My appetizer was a perfectly delivered "Pate de campagne" with pickles and spicy mustard on the side. Just like in france ! We also sampled (as the food is enough to share) the XL asparagus which were perfectly cooked. Unfortunately the anchovie hollandaise was hopelessly oversalted and halved the pleasure (and i am a big anchovie fan). The Pea soup (served in a stainless steel thermos) was heavenly thick and creamy. We opted for three 'fishy' mains: The black cod with truffled mashed potatoes got the highest praises. Grilled to perfection with a nice crust and bitably juicy in the middle. Unfortunately the Ahi tuna steak was a bit overdone and spoiled that textural pleasure i expected. Third were the scallops which were sublime and just right. Topped with a thin truffle slice and seved with a creamy mushroomy sauce it hit the spot. The bread basket which came with the mains was very well received. Probably one of the if not the best baguette i had in a restaurant in Shanghai. Deserts..well..we HAD to try. And thank god we did. The PP aproach to lemon tart is mindboggling. Trust me. Go there. Order it, eat it. Awesome. The fresh yoghurt was...well, fresh yoghurt. Delicious by itself, but insignificant next to the lemon tart. Ok, so we got an appology for the salty sauce and one glass of wine was for free as it was at room temperature (not good for a chardonnay). But don't tell me "we already served 3 bottles today" so that my glass was not chilled yet. Still good value for money if you stay off the Petrus (optional). Apart from that: I will be back for sure. And i want a window seat please.
