This "modern Thai" restaurant resides within the three-floor Wagas concept and is dressed similarly to its upstairs neighbor Mr Willis. They serve up the normal range of Thai favorites, from spring rolls to pad Thai to curry, but they've also got a more innovative list of mains that fuse non-traditional Thai ingredients with authentic Thai flavor. Make sure you try the salted cod.

[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]Thai | Mithai[HTML_REMOVED] [HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]July 2010[HTML_REMOVED] [HTML_REMOVED]The Wagas-owned complex at 195 Anfu Lu conspicuously shares ingredients, staff and sometimes even menu items. But Mithai, the latest newcomer, stands apart, adding fiery, Asian spice to the Western culinary cartel. Occupying an entire floor complete with a large open kitchen, this modern Thai restaurant is spacious yet intimate. With honeyed wood tables, weathered wicker ceiling decorations and luscious brown chairs, the atmosphere is more romantic than tropical. The staff makes sure to keep your ice waters filled–an integral service as Mithai is quite liberal with its spice. The soft shell crab starter (¥78) is a delicate portion of fried crab served sizzling hot on a bed of slivered green mango. The tom yum soup (¥38) comes in a neat, little cup with deliciously fresh shrimp, mussel and squid stewed in a deep, orange hued broth. Despite the soup’s spice levels being set on nuclear, it was so tasty that we powered through, sweat beading and our mouths burning. The generously-portioned green curry chicken comes topped with fragrant kaffir lime leaf chiffonade and a swirl of luscious coconut cream (¥58). The savory sweet curry base is welcomingly mild and dotted with chunks of chicken and assorted vegetables. It’s rich without being greasy and we sopped it up with hot, aromatic organic brown rice (¥10). The highlight of the evening though, was the barbecue sea salt snapper (¥138). The fish is encrusted in glistening salt crystals and baked to juicy, tender perfection. The subtly flavored snowy, white fish falls off the bones and each mouthful is spiked with a taste of the sea. We’ll be back soon for more. [HTML_REMOVED]■ Dan Ouyang

My Wife and asked Mi Thai to organize a party event last year (a kind of wedding party). We reserved the main room in front of the kitchen. The manager was really cool and helped us a lot. I must say the price was really reasonable for the food and service quality (we asked many places at that time, some wanted to charge a freaking amount of money). The party had musicians, performances... We made a lot of noise and all was just great. We had a splendid evening until 2pm. The food was delicious. We had a Great night there.

Food quality was better than expected. The best compliment I can give for a Thai restaurant in Shanghai is that the dishes were not over sweetened! I enjoyed a delicious tom yum soup with the full balance of spicy and sour. The portions are small but finely tuned for the taste buds.

The decor and interior setup is on-par, and Mithai is a go-to restaurant for taking a date. It isn't the most authentic Thai cuisine one can find in Shanghai, and it can run on the pricier side, but it is nonetheless a solid effort and a restaurant I head back to every so often.

Having travelled through thailand on a food discovery adventure, I know the food here is not very authentic thai. But having said that it is still damn tasty, the open kitchen is stunning as are the chefs in their bright kitchen atire. A group of us went to Mi Thai and one the 10 has worked with wagas for a number of years so he knew the front of house manager so we may have been lucky but the service we recieved was perfect and cheerful. We ate perfectly cooked spring rolls and fresh fish cakes with tasty side sauces to start. For mains we had a green curry, tender peices of chicken swimming in spicy coconut cream and chiffed lime leaves. We also had a duck curry which although quite similar in flavour was good and presented quite impresively. I loved the pad thai as maybe this was an unmodified recipe, and it reminded me of the markets of Bangkok. All of the portions were quite large and a massive bowl of brown rice sat in the middle of the table to accompany the dishes. To drink, the girls had a Thai twist on a daquiri apparently "refreshing" and seemed to do do the trick as they were in fits of giggles half way through mains. And us lads had a few bottles of a German reisling called Dr. Loosen which matched the spicyness of the food. Damage: about 300yy each.

One of the worst Thai food I've had in a long time. Having lived in Bangkok for a few years, I know what authentic Thai food is like. Having said that, I also enjoy 'modern' or 'fusion' Thai. But this was just bad - it's definitely not authentic and it it's supposed to be 'modern', then at least make it tasty and interesting. The sauces tasted like they came out of a can.

The decor is very interesting with creative use of wicker and intimate lighting. Pity the food isn't half as good as the decor.

Went in a couple nights ago--great comfortable space (dark wood and leather everywhere) and some solid pad Thai. Loved the salted cod though. Fantastic dish. Real pure fishy flavor nice bracketed by the salt and the lime juice sprinkled on top. They've also got killer lemonade, spiked with limes imported weekly from Thailand.
