This upbeat, six-table Thai spot comes from a former Simply Thai employee who left and open a restaurant with her mother. Curries go for RMB60 and have some kick to them, the rest of the menu is filled with all the usual staples plus a couple funkier dishes like tamarind fish as well. They also do delivery; check their website for more details.

There’s nothing small about Urban Thai, except for the restaurant’s square footage. Everything else here–the spice, the flavors, the hospitality–comes really big. We ventured to the six-table Urban Thai on a weekend, when they serve a RMB150 all-you-can-eat deal. And it was fantastic. We began with tod mun pla, their obsession-worthy fish cakes. Boasting minced fish fillet mixed with fish paste, kaffir lime leaves and egg, these cakes are plump and flavorful. And while the sweet and spicy condiment is nice, it’s completely unnecessary. Their som tam (green papaya with green beans, dried shrimp, cherry tomatoes and peanuts) is equally delightful, especially as the spice from the chilies creeps up and the dish becomes addictively spicy. Impossibly tender from marinating in coconut cream and Thai herbs, their gai yang, a Thai style barbecue chicken, is so fatty and delicious it’s almost as luscious as duck. One portion won’t be enough. Their signature soup, tom kha gai, is the perfect marriage of hot and sweet flavors. It has an initially spicy bite that is soon cooled by the silky coconut broth and fresh cilantro. The other ingredients–galangal, lemongrass, shallots and herbs–are carefully and artfully balanced, without a single one overpowering another. The beef curry, featuring tender chunks of beef and potato, is both warm and comforting from the cinnamon and massaman. This spice blend is magic. It’s only been open for a month, but this mother-daughter spot is already better than most Thai chains in town. We’ll be back. A lot.[HTML_REMOVED] [HTML_REMOVED]Reviewed in March, 2011.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED] [HTML_REMOVED]Our rating: 4/5[HTML_REMOVED]

Urban Thai offers a nice environment to enjoy well elaborated Thai food. The most accurate adjective to describe this place would be: Modest. Environment is sober, prices are fair, food is tasty although the presentation could be improved. There is nothing very outstanding but It is still a very suitable place to spend for a date or any calm and confortable occasion. If you are looking for regular Thai restaurant near your place, then this is definitely the right spot! Reservation is greatly recommended to be sure having a spot in this very small place.

I had heard this place was great through the grape vine and was pleasantly surprised at how awesome it was. I went for the set lunch menu, which seems like it may be a little expensive for a thai lunch, but in all honesty it was totally worth it. The fish cakes on the appetizer platter were bursting with flavours, and were so fresh, so clean. I also tried the chicken Larb (minced chicken salad) which again were just so fresh tasting, with a great kick of spice and herbs. The BBQ chicken was a little disappointing because of the lunch set size, which probably isn't worth the price, but this at least kept the flow with great taste. Thai iced tea is incredibly addicting as well.

This tiny little gem creates a beautiful atmosphere and I have definitely been craving that food ever since I walked out the door. I love the blue paint as well!

As I've said elsewhere (and more in depth), this place offers a no gimmick very welcome addition to the Shanghai dining scene. Been here quite a few times, and while I love thai food, none of the other offerings in the city have performed to the point of becoming "regular haunts". Because of it's smallness, I'd say people stumbling upon this little thai joint will be keeping it to themselves as their little secret, just as most veterans in the city have their own secret joints (be it for tonkatsu, sushi, california, french, etc).

The food chalks up to be authentic home cooked (literally) thai fare. My second or third visit, I learned that the chef's in the kitchen are actually the owner's auntie and mother. The larb, spicy beef salad, tamarind fish (espscially), phad thai, pandan chicken leaves, red duck curry, all of it, simply all of it is cooked with special love. The fish is cooked perfectly that it falls off the bones easily, perfect balance of flavors with all of the dishes I've tried. The desserts are great too, though the only thing missing is mango sticky rice! However, the place makes up for it with some street style desserts that I had not seen nor tried in other thai restaurant (and I apparently missed them last time I was in thailand).

Excellent value too. The damage is reasonable to the point where we'd not feel guilty heading down there on more than one night of the week.

The place does feel a tad small upon entry, but the food and service well makes up for it. The green curry is authentic, the iced tea with milk is refreshing in this heat. This will be canteen for a long time definitely!

I love this restaurant - despite being so new it's really established itself in my neighbourhood and I often see other regulars there. The food is amazingly authentic and I get to make it more or less spicy depending what I feel like. In comparison to other thai places I've been to I feel there is a really attention to quality food and have even met the chef - the owner's mum who is actually thai!! I admit to having my favourites (thai fish cakes, chicken coconut soup, fried basil, coconut puddings, thai iced tea for example) but I love trying their new dishes too which recommend to anyone trying Urban Thai for the first time (or 100th time!) Also wish I could paint my apartment the same colour as this place - so fresh!!

definitely not the the top thai in shanghai, but it's solid. ambiance is the strong point as the place is tiny and intimate and i thought the music was pretty remarkably right on. food? not as good as simply thai and a full rung or two below that place on wuding lu. the tom yong wasnt spicy, the mixed veggie dish was as caseyprich pointed out just a chinese sautee. nothing had the right amount of spice, everything was a bit too sweet and salty. the fish cakes were good. the pandam chicken was good. the green curry was allright.

Urban Thai offers a very nice atmosphere with good food. I'll admit that the plates were a bit over the top for me, but I really like the dark tones of everything and the cleanliness. The mixed vegetable dish was a disappointment, really just a chinese dish, but otherwise the fish cakes and curries were really good.

Awesome awesome place! I'm a fiend for Thai food and have been to most in this city. Others seem hesitant to dial up the heat even when you beg for it, but this place comes through in the clutch. Will definitely make this my regular Thai spot!
