The owners of Coconut Paradise have worked their magic again. Though there are a few bland dishes on the menu, most of the Yunnanese specialties here are simultaneously exotic and delicious. The dark, rich décor and romantic spotlighting provide the perfect atmosphere for hip, young culinary anthropologists.

I love this place. I haven't tried a dish there that I haven't liked. Great place to take out-of-towners, and dates!

I had the worst experience at Lost heaven a couple of weeks ago myself. We reserverd a table for 15 and when we arrived no table was available , they made us wait and they didnt even apologise , the girls in the reception were quite rude!! and they gave us 2 tables of like 8 people each. We were very upset and the manager couldnt do anything about it. He didnt even offered us a Complementary drink! the food was late ,the service was horrible. I think they need more staff or a better manager. and Nicer staff!!

I rarely feel strongly enough for or against a restaurant to post a review online, but my experience here really takes the biscuit. It took a full 20 minutes to get my drink. Their excuse – the tea was made on the third floor (and since I was on the first floor, it presumably took 10 minutes to navigate each flight of steps). My main dish, which took 50 minutes to reach me. Bear in mind that this was a simple dish of fried chicken with a scallion/spring onion dressing. The chicken was dry, slightly chewy - nothing a Hong Kong cha chaan teng (café) couldn’t do. To top this off, the rice I ordered to accompany this was cold, and the replacement took a full 20 minutes to arrive, by which time my chicken was cold. How does it take 20 minutes to get a bowl of white rice??? The waiters explained that there were only 2 people in the kitchen that night, which I found hard to believe, especially when the tables around were getting their dishes in a timely manner. Avoid this place at all costs.

Its more like Taiwanese Cuisine thats yunnan inspierd. The food is decent, not great. But the ambience is excellent- great to bring out of town guests. Also quite suitable to bring a date which is exceptionally rare for Chinese restaurants to do that. Sadly they dont offer the " shui kou ji" anymore, but be sure to order their chicken with spring onions. for PICTURES and full REVIEW please check my blog: http://fattoro.com/2011/11/28/lost-heaven/

Food at Lost Heaven is reasonably good and decor / presentation are stylish. (We had the sauteed rice cakes and a shrimp dish.) But drinks are expensive. Overall, there is better food to be had for similar prices.

The service is terrible at Yan'an road Lost heaven.Pushing to order and order, can't add food, waiting 40 min for a drink, asked for taking away but food's gone, strange!!!.No waiters reply u at all unless paying the bill. Manager promised to call us back for the poor service and dispeared food but never ever!!!!
Worst experience ever in a restaurant. If your staffs don't care about the customer at all,you will close your business soon however the decor and environment you try to create.

I had the worst experience yesterday at Lost Heaven. I made reservations a day ahead to bring some friends visiting Shanghai. The reservation was at 730pm. We arrived 15mins early and was asked to wait at the bar because our table wasn't ready. My friends and I had some drinks and 30mins later, our table was still not available. What's the point of making a reservation???The excuse was they had some late customers and have not finished eating. They asked us to wait for another 15mins and told us to order our food first. A complimentary appetiser was given to compensate for our wait. After 15mins later, our table was still not available. That was the last straw! We all walked off and no effort was taken this round to ask us to stay. I guess business is too good that even we walked off without paying for our drinks, they didn't mind as well!

I didn't believe in God until I found Lost Heaven. Okay, irresistible hyperbole; but more true than not.
Wonderful meal in an enticing and, dining room din notwithstanding, romantic setting w/ lighting and music to eat and drink and ooh and aah to. The wild vegetable cakes, the Burmese shrimp paste w/ string beans, the Dali style chicken, and the spicy cod looked and tasted sumptuous.
Service? The lovely and experienced wait staff didn't miss a beat and treated us like king and queen.
Lost Heaven reminds me of Maya - a place where the food is said to be "not representative" or "not authentic." I don't know what is authentic Yunnanese as every Yunnanese restaurant we've been to is different from the next, but like Maya, Lost Heaven is just plain better - and they know how to use the cilantro.
See you soon!

fun atmosphere, okay meal

Great Food and Great Service , two restaurants , but not the same consistency in the service. Bar on second floor, definaltey a nice place to lounge and enjoy!~ Suggest working on the one near the french consession area, ettique in service needs a huge scoop of sugar!~

First class service along with a fantastic environment made for a very pleasant dining experience. Great place to take friends from out-of-town, but definitely not the most authentic Yunnan experience you can find in town. Regardless, the food was flavorful, well presented, and there are quite a few dishes on the menu that would be hard to find in Shanghai. The price was very reasonable given the environment, so I was pretty satisfied.

Like most of the other commenters here, I have to agree that whilst the food is good at Lost Heaven, it doesn't justify the price. Still, if you've got out-of-towners visiting, this won't fail to impress on some level. I've only been once, but on my visit I found the service to be first class. The decor and atmosphere are also nice. However, one minor problem was the smell - there's a serious whiff of unwashed socks around.
-
-
Looking to impress someone? This is the place. Finally a pricier place that is worth every penny/mao. Don't remember the names of the dishes I ate, but was certainly satisfied by all of them. The most impressive aspect of Lost Heaven was the atmosphere that was amplified by servers that truely know what hospitality is.

-
Located in a quiet road, Lost heaven really acts what the name tells. A gorgeous plave for dining. You may love Yunnan even if you haven't been there through Lost heaven. The atmosphere is good, the the whole room is decorated by unique props and green plants. It's really warm, you just feel like flying thouhds miles to some tropical places. It's good to have such kind of dining place in Shanghai.

I went there 1 week before, because i heard a lot about this place (the one near the Bund), i really was disappointed by the food, it was packed though, but i found the cuisine is not like in Yunnan, so many small restaurants are much better in Shanghai...i'll not come bak to this place, and my cn gf, as really really disapointed as well...we didn't finished any of our courses...for a bill of 589 at 2 people (including drinks).... Not to recomend

Excellent dining experience. We were there on a Monday night and the restaurant was packed. Food and service was flawless.
-
-
My first experience at Lost Heaven the Bund was awesome. Food is beautiful, great service with attentive staff - especially from a young Indonesian trainee who works as a waiter that night. And the rooftop bar was more than one can ask for after a wonderful dinner. Such an experience!
Unfortunately the second one in Gaoyou Road is far below expectation. Especially booked a table for my birthday, but the staff failed to notify us and kept us waiting at the bar for over an hour. Finally we got our table after a long argument with the reception, we were ushered to a table in the corner and had an extremely rude waitress. Definitely will not come back to this place - or recommend it to anyone.

As we walked into this cool, dimmly lit restaurant for lunch on a hot day, I was plesently surprised by the awesome deccor. I have no idea what yunnan food is or what it is meant to taste like so we ordered from a slighty grumpy waitress, 7 dishes. First came some pretty damn good spring rolls filled with cabbage and some sort of meat accompanied with a good spicy sauce. The standout dish by far was a plate of boneless chicken peices on a bed of chilli and spring onions. The chicken had fantastic flavour and wasn't dry like often happens. The other dishes were all good including a tasty beef curry. In summary a great place for a bite and definitly get the spring onion chicken.

I've been to Lost Heaven (French Concession), many times with friends, family, and even clients. I love the energy, colors, and environment. My favorite experience is taking off my shoes and snuggling into the overstuffed lounging areas down in the bar before dinner. The food always leaves me completely satisfied. A very relaxing atmosphere. Highly recommend.

-
the ambience is good, deco, tableware are all impressed. and the place is owned by taiwanese, however, the food is not so good. I think they are ajusted to meet foreigner's flavor. For me, it is kind of two sweet... don't like the yunnan and burma mixed taste though.
-
-
the food is not authentic Yunnan cuisine at all. that said, food doesn't necessarily have to be authentic to taste good. unfortunately, Lost Heaven fails on both accounts. The dishes were either bland or overly-spiced, but without a real understanding of the subtle flavors and combination of spices, herbs and marinades that make Yunnan cuisine what it is.
service was horrendous. i had to ask for my drink 5 times and eventually got up from the table to find a bartender who could make the drink for me. some of our appetizers came nearly at the end of our meal as we were finishing our mains. getting my water glass refilled was a whole task altogether. i didn't get mad at the servers as they were genuinely trying, but were just lacking the proper training and guidance to know what to do with themselves.
the ambiance and decor are nice, but don't make up for the fact that the service is terrible, food is mediocre at best and overpriced.
i left Lost Heaven pissed that i wasted 2 hours of my life eating bad food that was overpriced. in fact, i was still hungry since all i did was taste most dishes and decide i didn't want to eat any more. luckily there are lots of decent eateries within walking distance for a fraction of the price. i think my table was the only table of Asians in the entire restaurant. it's safe to say that i'll never go back to Lost Heaven again and that i'd only recommend it to white people who care more about ambiance and decor and who don't put much weight on value, service and don't really understand Asian cuisine.

Asked about their valet parking service- yes we have was the reply. So we went and had a nice lunch, told to park directly in front of the place on the opposite of their street with all the other cars. Came out after lunch to find a 200 Rmb PARKING TICKET! The door man said it happens all the time. Will NOT go back to this place again, no matter how good the food might have been.

Good food and atmosphere. I like the downstairs lounge. It's good to have a cocktail before food. I will come back!

LOVE IT!!!!!!!! Girlies tried it out Last wednesday and we will be back.

We were a bit skeptical after reading the reviews here and we had no prior experience of Yunnan/Burmese cuisine, but our dinner was thoroughly enjoyable. The Hua Yao Dia stir fried beef was particularly tasty and generously doused in coriander/cilantro. We also enjoyed the aubergine (eggplant) in tomato sauce and the scallion chicken, all pleasantly spicy. The tofu-spring rolls were a bit mushy for our taste but still went down nicely with the sauce. In general the flavours were refreshingly different from Thai and Vietnamese, though we couldn't speak for their authenticity. The atmosphere and decor is in fact remarkably similar to Coconut Paradise, dark and a bit on the noisy side, with similar prices, but for us it was a pleasure to try out a new cuisine.

nice bar/terrace on the top floor.

I am not one to say whether this is authentic Yunnan Cuisine as I have yet to travel to the Yunnan province. What I do know is the past two times I have eaten there the service has been excellent, the food tasty, and the atmosohere simply gorgeous. Whether you are sitting on the first or second floor, the decor, music, and energy of the restuarant is the perfect accompaniament to any meal. You will pay here what you will pay at any other Western oriented restuarant here and it is very easy to pay a lot more for a lot less in Shanghai. For a date or a group of friends, this restuarant will hit the spot and satisfy your tastebuds.

Went there with a few of my co-workers the other day. Food to be honest is just so so, reminded me of south east asian food. But I have to say the ambiance is great, and they have done a hell of a job. Really enjoy the evening, and a couple of nice cocktails. Great place for dates, and after work relaxation.
-
-
this place has a expensive chinese food, but the food is good, i dont know how aithentic it is, but the food is not bad, the place sometimes feels dark, lack of light, but is not a bad place for a date. or with friends from time to time, maybe once every three moths. the bar is nice for after dinner.
-
-
quite a pricey place hence i think i could not go there quite often for i am learning the way Chinese do.
-
-
my bill is shining yet i think i could have more rather to pay for the high rent and decor...
-
-
like most new restaurants catering to expats and foreigners, it offers a great atmosphere but the food is somewhat lacking. not sure what i ate but its not really yunnan food - more fusion i guess. you basically paying for the presentation and nice atmosphere...which it does well.
-
-
I love the ambience here but i fail to understand the "yunnan" part of the cuisine - its basically fusion thai food that's been modified from their coconut paradise menu in a different decor setting - but for a nice date night out i'd say its quite a good choice at an affordable price for the experience
-
-
the place is gorgeous, have been in love with it since i first went in 2007! this and coconut paradise have decor and environment you should not miss, especially if you are into dimmed light and spots with character. food is good also and nice presentation.
-
-
Food is ok, but the place is great!! Definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a romantic evening.
-
-
Great place. Food is quite allright, the restaurant is beautiful, great atmosphere (little bit noisy perhaps, people are having a good time). The bar downstairs has a fantastic lounge area. Will definitely go again and recommend it to my friends
-
-
Great food, good service. All the produce was fresh and cook perfectly. Service was fast and attentive. The only thing it is sooooo noisy.
Bar is super cool sitting on the beds, cocktails are ok!
-
-
Quite location, with a great atmosphere and decor throughout.
The food was fantastic, and had wonderful service. Definitely one of the best Southeast Asian cuisine in Shanghai.
Well recommended!!
-
-
i like the food alot, but i think the problem is that the restaurant is too dark, but apart from that everything is nice. the bar is a good place to enjoy with a company.
-
-
This is a fun restaurant - good food and interesting atmosphere. I brought some of my clients from the US here and they loved it too. The food is delicious and I love the Thai Zeed drink (one of my favorite drinks!) The one setback is that it is quite pricey, but that doesn't stop it from being busy all the time. Good idea to make reservations. This is a great restuartant to bring guests and clients to for some delicious Yunnan/Southeast Asian cuisine.

Lost Heaven Yunnan Folk Cuisine is located in the trendy French Concession area. The restaurant is actually a 3-storey Shanghai villa and apparently attracts lots of celebs and the stylish crowd. It's not hard to see why - trendy and moody, it's filled with chic Shanghainese and loads of expats.
The interior is gorgeous, with Southeast Asian wooden floors and Yunnanese stone face masks as decor, and minimalist spotlights here and there. It's dark and moody, but is definitely more of a place to go with mates, than a date restaurant.
So what's Yunan cuisine like? It's actually just like Thai food, with perhaps some Vietnamese influence. Nothing too exotic that we couldn't eat it, but still interesting enough. We ordered up a STORM. Or I should say I did, whoops! I am dangerous when the menu is left in my hands and I'm the one doing the ordering ;) I basically ordered my way round the menu and we neded up with almost 30 dishes.. for about 18 people ;)
The food was good, but not all-out spectacular. Rather, some were fairly standard (you'd get it at any other place for half the price), whilst others were unique and delicious. They have an extensive menu, so I'd prefer they have a smaller one and focus on making each and every one of their dishes perfect. My favourite, by far, was the whole steamed fish (that came out on a fish-shaped platter) in some soy sauce and a scattering of fried bits on top. The fish was so tender and absolutely divine.
It's a great place to go with friends, but it's certainly not cheap - we paid over 200元 (USA$29) each which is extraordinarily expensive by China standards. Fantastic, attentive service though - despite how boisterous we were. Even when everyone was causing a ruckus outside whilst waiting for taxis, the staff were really tolerant and polite with our drunken lot of annoying people :P

1st time: dissapointed 2nd time: Enjoyed it
Maybe it was a too much drunk and a nightlife vodka-rum headache, but i didn't enjoy it really well the first time and i paid too much for 2 beers and 2 dishes.
BUT the second time, good surprise!!! The design is awesome, the food was good and the bill was quite reasonnable.
Go there if you want to discover new flavours but don't go there drunk!

I agree with above who say its a bit noisy in the restaurant. That makes it a great place for a group. Excellent food. I love everything I have ever tried there. Low lighting is a plus I think. Lounge downstairs very comfy and I can't seem to recreate their delicious Thai Zeed drinks no matter what I do! So I just have to keep going there for them.
-
-
If you are looking for a place to dine and sweet-talk with your date, Lost heaven is not right for you because it's too noisy that you barely hear what your date says, or your date easily get distracted by other people sitting around you; instead, it's a great place to dine and chat and laugh with your close friends. Perfect for a Friday girls night-out after work, your neighbour wouldn't pay attention to what you gossip about. Food is good in general, price is around RMB150-200 per head.
-
-
I find the main floor bar ambience excellent--a good place to come and enjoy the spicy Thai Zeed drinks and a few appetizers before heading elsewhere for dinner. A definite favorite place of mine...
-
-
A very nice decor, a bit noisy though (don't bring your date there...) About the food, everything is good and well presented but not outstanding. The bill reflects more the good taste on the interior design side than on the kitchen's. As it's classy and "bone-less", I'd recommend this place for a western friend's visit.
-
-
Don't understand the hype of many places in Shanghai. Noisy, lacklustre service, mediocre taste, overpriced.
-
-
Just not that good at all for the price. 50 to 70 RMB for a veritable dish.....come on.
Good for taking out-of-towners if they or your company is footing the bill

Where You Eat
Name: Calvin Wang Profession: Interior Designer
As an interior designer, when I go out to eat I'm looking not only for great food but also for a nice space. I like to eat alone sometimes, totally enjoying the food and the atmosphere. One of the restaurants I go to nowadays is called Origin. I like the solid wooden wall, long sofas and warm lighting. Of course they have good food, too. In the same area, thaifoodstation is awesome. The place is small but they have a cute balcony and you can hear and see people shopping when you are eating, pretty relaxing. For Burmese food, Lost Heaven is one of the best. Actually they have Thai, Yunnan and Burmese food--rare in Shanghai. Some of the Yunnan and Burmese-style food is really traditional. The interior is warm, cozy and a little bit mysterious. It's a little noisy, but still good.
-
-
The food is very good and the atmosphere is quite nice. However, the small portions they give are far too liltlle. If they are charging 60 -90 rmb per dish, that dish should be a very decent sized portion, not a skimpy portion!
-
-
The atmosphere is good and the deco is cool. Instantly you are reminded of Coconut Grove... The service is competent. Food is bland. It is a blander version of thai food and so not exciting. There is a couple of nice chicken dishes and the curry is so salty! It is definitely a tourist trap.
-
-
Had dinner here with a group of friends last week, same owner as Coconut Paradise which you see when you have dinner here. The interior is similar in atmosphere, still very nice. The food is ok - I wasn't WOW'ed by anything in particular. They don't serve much authentic Yunnan food other than some dished with mushrooms from that region in them, so just be aware of that before you go if you're hoping to get "real" Yunnan cuisine.
-
-
The food was quite flavorful and served promptly, but meat dishes were on the lukewarm side, probably due to elaborate plate presentation. Low light I found to be a disadvantage.

Love the decor and ambiance of Lost Heaven. Even like the decorative touches, although impractical. Must agree with hellbentkent, good place to take people visiting Shanghai.
The cuisine is not bad, but not great.
Still, it's a solid 4 stars.
