Sitting on the 36th floor of the Pudong Shangri-La, the gemstone hues of this bar's decor are a stark contrast to the stunning view overlooking the Bund. This venue has a resident jazz vocalist and an extensive cocktail list. The service impressive and the toilets out of this world.

Description

Jade on 36 Bar, as modern, cosmopolitan and yet as Chinese as Shanghai itself, is a stylish, hip space for sipping superbly crafted drinks, gazing at Shanghai's stunning skyline and listening to the sounds of live jazz.

Sickeningly expensive, but most definitely worth it.

Mrs Narsfs and I stayed at the hotel for our anniversary (I know, I'm an old romantic) and I rather balked at the price for this place at first, so we went for a nice disappointing dinner elsewhere.

We came back here as a special moving house treat, and were absolutely bowled over.

We started with the pate en croute (150RMB). Served with onion marmalade and melon compote, this was quite possibly the most delectable terrine I have eaten since Paris. Mrs Narsfs had no idea what she was eating, but she loved it.

The Asparagus soup (150RMB) was an extremely creamy affair that tended a touch towards the sweet, with juicy chicken and truffles. Light years ahead of the normal foot-wash that you get around town.

Mrs Narsfs enjoyed the black cod - her eyes lit up at the first mouthful, I tried a little and it was smooth in texture and perfectly cooked to bring out the soft cod flavour, normally overwhelmed by salt hereabouts. (200RMB)

I was a little disappointed to see veal on the menu, and naturally didn't order, went with the Aurora Lamb instead. It. Was. Brilliant. My sincerest complients to the chef - mind you, at 500RMB a pop, it had better be good. More truffles, getting a bit rich on the old stomach by this time, but the lamb itself was so perfectly cooked, with a meat falling off the bone feel that just promised to slip down without any fuss. Great for the digestion too.

Awesome, awesome place, but expect to part with a few days' salary for the pleasure of eating in this place. Stunning view too: if the wallet hadn't been groaning under the vicious beating, we could have stayed here all night.

Issue 16, Where You Drink: Eve Crawford

"My favorite drink is an ice cold glass of champagne. It's so extravagant and frivolous, and it makes every day feel special. One venue I love is Jade on 36 Bar. It's so extravagant and frivolous, and it makes every day feel special. I love the view; I think it's one of the best in Shanghai. You can see the Pearl Tower, and it looks like you can just reach out and touch it. Their champagne is always cold and service is pretty darn good. It is the Shangri-La, after all!"

The drinks here are some of the best you'll find in my opinion. And better quality than a lot of spots on the other side of the Bund for comparable, sometimes cheaper, prices. It's a nice spot to take in the more scenic and Old World view of the Bund rather than the kitschy Pudong skyline. The taratini is delicious for those who enjoy berry flavors. Yes guys, this is a great date spot for a few drinks if you want something a bit more subdued and a great selection of "girlie" drinks, but there's a good variety of drinks that will appeal to you guys as well.

Very stunning, elegant and caucasian scene Went on ladies' night (free admission, free drinks) and there were few asian women in attendance. Lots of caucasian foreigner women but apparently someone has dropped the ball in getting the word out in Mandarin. Definitely a must visit for the skyline views. But beware... Shanghai starts turning off the skyscraper lights at about 11pm on weeknights. Maybe they're on later on weekends? My Korean girlfriend in attendance also approved of this place immensely.
