Previously a post office for the Jing'an District, architect Raefer H. Wallis, along with the vision of owners Scott Barrack and Jules Kwan, has turned this warehouse space into China's first carbon neutral hotel. Besides simple, Chinese influenced modern decor in the main lobby and rooms, this luxury boutique hotel also houses the restaurant Downstairs by David Laris.

Such a shame. URBN had an amazing courtyard with fountains. What happened? Why ruin a great thing? Infilling a bar into the project makes it feel stuffy, and eliminating the water fountains was a big mistake. Did URBN get sold out? Ambiance is 9/10ths of the law. It doesn't have any now. Stuffing the courtyard with uncomfortable tables is going to give you a few extra dollars for serving alcoholic beverages, but what about the business the hotel will lose from guests not 'feeling the charm' anymore???

There were fountains in the courtyard? I don't remember this, although I've dined at URBN several times since they opened. Previously, the courtyard and ground floor was occupied by Roomtwentyeight, a Wagas-owned establishment. The design was a touch more airy and Scananavian back then, so you might have assumed its sole function was that of hotel lobby.
I've never found the food served at URBN to be anything special; return visits were only warranted by the pleasant outdoor atmosphere on a warm, sunny day. That sad, I last visited for brunch over 3 months ago and found the food inexcusably mediocre. Portions are ridiculously small for the price. I definitely won't be returning.
