When I arrived in Shanghai for the first time, I was captivated by the 'flow'. I described the Shanghainese people as one school of fish swimming together in the sea. I've been very inspired by this city and I've been very disappointed as well. I didn't think I would be a target for theft, but one day I was. It's life in the fast lane. Stay with the school or get eaten by a shark!!! When I first arrived and was driving toward the city from the Pudong airport, I nearly passed out from all the grime that makes up this metropolis. When my feet touched the ground, my first stop at URBN hotel, I was amazed at how the city transformed to a beautiful streetscape. And then my heart sang. Along the way, I made a conscious decision to pick out the inspiring, and look on the bright side. Finding positive energy in the beautiful people and places that cross my path, makes it all enjoyable. I love teaching, and have had great experiences teaching English in public, private primary schools, and afterschool academy. I've made some great friends in the international community as well as the local community and I look forward to meeting and making more.

Fashion Launch
Lauren Elissa Pilgreen was born in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles California in February of 1992 into a family of creatives; her father an: architect, sculptor, artist, musician; her mother a designer, her grandparents artists, and her late great grandmother Eva Marks Bernard was a trimming buyer for two of the world’s leading fashion designers: Bill Blass and Oscar De La Renta.
When Lauren was only 3 years old, it was evident that she had an eye for fashion. She would shop in a store called For Kids Only; a European import fashion store. Lauren, whom at that age, was too young to comprehend 'sale', would cling to the super expensive designer 'gowns'.
Her neighborhood high school had the only fashion school program in the Los Angeles school district. Lauren was an honor student across the board; wanting to pursue her dream, she entered the fashion program L'Atelier in her sophomore year and participated by having her design creations in 2 spring fashion shows. Lauren, an accelerated student, took college classes while in high school.
When Lauren found out that her family was moving to Shanghai, China, she decided to graduate high school a year early in the summer of 2008, and attended Raffles Design Institute for Fashion Design. Now having participated in numerous fashion shows collectively with her fashion peers at Raffles, Lauren, at 18, is now ready to launch her first completely independent showing.
An international traveler, Lauren has traveled to Puerto Vallarta and Ixtapa-Mexico, British Virgin Islands, Hong Kong, Cairns and Melbourne-Australia, Paris, Barcelona and Madrid-Spain, Milan, Venice, Cinque Terra, Siena, Roma, Capri/Anna Capri-Italy, Sanya (Hainan Province)-China, and her current metropolis, Shanghai.
In addition to attending Raffles Design Institute for Fashion design, Lauren has been interning with:
Mary Ching Shoes: Hong Kong, Shanghai, London, and
Chow’s Jewelry (Soon to be MaryJo, a series of unique collections of jewelry designs) Lauren fully embraces the international experiences she has living in Shanghai, has picked up the Mandarin and Shanghainese languages, and is enchanting the natives with her winning smile, grace, style, and personality. Please join us in celebrating the launch of Shanghai's youngest, international, independent, fashion creative.
The Upcoming Fashion Show:
The Spring/Summer 2011 collection is inspired by the spirit and fluidity of the ocean. It is a fifteen-piece, RTW, eveningwear collection consisting of ultra-feminine gowns and slightly androgynous jumpsuits. Details, silhouettes, and fabric represent the beauty of the sea with a small glimmer of Shanghai. Both Mary Ching shoes and MaryJo jewelry will be a part of this show, as they will both present their upcoming collections on the models as well.

Hi Chelsefina, Since you are not married, not sure that your boyfriend would be able to get a visa for an extended period of time. He would eventually have to have a valid working permit, which a prospective employer would secure for him, so that he could remain in the Country for a significant amount of time. If your boyfriend got a TEFL or TESOL certificate before he came over, he would have a better chance at being sponsored. They have TEFL courses just outside of Shanghai in Hangzhou also. He could possibly get an education while he is here and come on a student Visa. There are many English speaking programs. Alternatively, perhaps you can look into an employment agency. Of course it is a major bonus if your boyfriend can speak the language. All the best in your job hunting ;-)

Hi! I need some advice, please. I'm interested in coming to China, and possibly to Shanghai. I've already got job offers from some English schools and they are ready for me to come over. I'm ready, too. The problem is my boyfriend wants to come with me and work also, but he's not qualified to be a teacher, he doesn't have a degree or much professional experience outside of restaurant work and customer service. We were hoping he could come in and maybe work "under the table" as a chef or at a hostel or a private English conversation partner. Are there many people that do this? Would it be possible for him to find cash in hand jobs in Shanghai that don't require working papers? Please email me at chelsefina@gmail.com. Thanks!
